Tom Hardy (Eddie) and Venom chat in a dark alley somewhere in Mexico. They hear a sound, someone or something calling for help. They stumble on a door that leads to a room with dozens of dogs in cages. Realize it’s a dog fighting ring.

When they turn around, 5 men are in Eddie’s way. Ivo Nandi, A guy with facial tattoos “Can’t let you leave.” Eddie: I have a dark unpredictable side. Gang leader: Stop speaking.

Eddie: You don’t understand, I’m giving you a chance… Venom [telepathically]: (Tell me when…) Gang leader puts knife to Eddie’s face. Eddie: When.

Eddie kicks the gang leader 20 feet across the room into a wall. Gang members start shooting him. Before the bullets reach him, he’s already transformed to Venom. 6 tentacles rise from his body reaching to the dog cages, releasing them. They all immediately bite the gang members. One of them manages to run away. Eddie while upside down asks “Where are you going?”

Symbiotes can take over any living being/animals. For them to live long term or thrive they have to be physically and mentally compatible. Which goes back to the weird bromance between Eddie and Venom.

Terrifying Xenophage

The xenophage is an alien creature designed to eat and hunt down symbiotes. Director Kelly Marcel wanted something to inspire fear even among the syms, just like Venom. The original comic design was miniscule. For LAST DANCE she was able to imagine a terrifying creature with more than 6 legs, tentacles, several rows of sharp teeth.

It has the form of the xenophage in the original ALIENS (1979) while being a hundred times bigger and faster. Closer to King kong level size. Combined with the teeth and ferocity of the PREDATOR (1987) hunters.

Almost impossible to visualize or get a grasp of mentally. But when you do see it on screen, it really is terrifying. Not just for symbiotes but anyone who sees it. Its capable of defeating not just one but several syms AND their hosts simultaneously.

Definitely an achievement for the designers, special effects and CGI team. May have an Oscar or two in the field of character design and animation.

Andy Serkis as Knull

I included the dialogue above because it sets up the premise of LAST DANCE well. We find out Knull created the symbiotes and is now sending the xenophage to hunt them down. Specifically in search of the codex, as key to his freedom.

The second more important reason, even if viewers read it, can never take away the bone chilling performance of Andy Serkis. He is the voice behind it. Serkis has become a genre on his own. Became the face of a new kind of acting. His isn’t just the voice but his movements and facial expressions were captured in Gollum in LORD OF THE RINGS. Then used in PLANET OF THE APES. Who else can you get as the god of the void? Serkis previously directed the, second installment VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE.

One of the reasons why VENOM franchise is a hit is because of the friendship or bond between Eddie and Venom. Tom Hardy is great at playing characters with those dual personalities. He also voices Venom btw.

He’s great at bad people who are thrust into heroism. Like Max Rockatansky in MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. He was more about saving himself than Furiosa and the brides escaping their slavish existence. He’s a great villain too as Bane in DARK KNIGHT RISES. Also with an unforgettable weird voice in that one.

Hardy is one of those actors who deserve far more awards than what he’s gotten. He has won a BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2011 and two – British Independent Film Awards Best Actor LEGEND (2015) and BRONSON (2009).

He’s earned enough clout creatively and financially to call the shots for Venom. He has story credit along with director/ screenwriter Kelly Marcel. It’s obvious that he wanted to say good bye to his alter ego with a bang and has successfully done so.
