EU Amb Massimo Santoro

LONG STORY SHORT is a Danish film that opened the fest last October 18, 2024. In attendance is EU Delegation Ambassador Massimo Santoro, Danish Emb. Rep Mme. Eva Fischer Mellbin and French Ambassador Marie Fontanel. The trio were among many of the diplomatic representatives of European Union member states.

Barkada

The story revolves around a series of get togethers of a barkada, (group of friends) in their midlife. Ellen is the childhood friend of Dya Josefine Hauch (Bolette) married to Janus Nabil Bakrawi (Adam) with 3 kids. Sebastian is married to Cecilie Stenspil (Eva) also with kids, (while having a secret affair with Ellen). The get togethers also see relationships bloom. Bolette’s brother Peter Gantzler (Rolf) is a school teacher who meets Marijana Jankovic (Dina) during the New Year’s eve dinner.

Trine Dyrholm (Anette) is also a kababata (childhood friend) of Ellen. Both of them now doctors. Anette is madly in love with Danica Curcic (Maya). The lesbian couple has been living together for years. Now Maya is desperate to bear a child.

Universality of Maintaining Relationships

Set in Denmark, there’s a universality in the portrayal of relationships. Having a lesbian relationship among them is refreshing and adds realism to what happens today. You can see different types of struggles. Some of them have difficulty of providing for the family or sometimes the waning of romance or love between partners.

There are also Danish customs that are featured in the get togethers. These are holidays not necessarily present in the Philippines. Like Midsummer’s Eve, which had pagan origins but evolved to Sankt Hans or Saint John’s Eve celebrating the birth of St John the Baptist, held on June 24^th.

Mille Lehfeldt’s Dramatic Advantage

The movie is definitely multiple focus, meaning it deals with the lives of several characters. The role of Ellen, however has most of the screen time. Played by Mille Lehfeldt who bears a strong resemblance to a young Ellen Barkin in Hollywood. Barin starred in countless movies including SEA OF LOVE with Al Pacino (1989). Cast most recently in action comedy the OUT LAWS.

They have similar facial features that can be wholesome and sexy at the same time. Although a relatively successful doctor, Ellen hasn’t been lucky in her relationships. Mille was able to balance the seriousness with the silly/childlike behavior she sometimes shows.

Brooding Jens Albinus

Jens Albinus plays Max, the late comer to the barkada. He is Anette’s cousin who recently came from a divorce. He reminds me of Domhnall Gleeson, an Irish actor who has carved a huge career in Hollywood in roles like STAR WARS: FORCE AWAKENS, HARRY POTTER and THE REVENANT. It’s not just the fact they’re both gingers/red heads. Gleeson is 18 years younger (than Albinus) and is the son of Brendan Gleeson who plays Jackie in JOKER FOLIE A DEUX.

They both have that brooding, sad expression. Here it’s the reverse, Albinus, seems to have a better comedic timing than his lookalike. Both are extremely versatile. But Albinus portrayal of Max is a welcome comedic relief.

Intense Trine Dyrholm

Trine Dyrholm plays Ellen’s BFF Anette. She is an iconic Swedish actress who has been recognized abroad. Apart from wins for this movie, she has won quite a few Best actress nods in: Berlinale THE COMMUNE (2016), DANISH FILM AWARDS – QUEEN OF HEARTS (2022), THE COMMUNE (2017), THE LEGACY- TV series (2016). Amongst many other trophies.

Dyrholm was a very convincing lesbian. But was married and had one son in real life. Her character always pushed Ellen to do what’s right. But was also a faithful friend no matter the situation.
