Indispensable Powerbroker

Roy Cohn is a larger than life figure, well known, especially in New York. Known as a mob attorney, with clients like Tony Salerno, Genovese Crime Family. Car scene in movie is based on a 1986, 60minutes report by Mike Wallace. The footage of Cohn with Salerno in a car was source of inspiration. Replacing Salerno with Trump. He also famously defended mob boss John Gotti from a murder rap.

Also in that 60 minute episode, “Described as Fundamentally dishonest… NY Disciplinary Bar describes him as ‘a total absence of moral character and professional fitness..’

Modern Day Philippine Version

Attorney Ferdinand Topacio, could be the Philippines’ version of Roy Cohn without the sense of humor or philosophical depth. They both have a rogue’s gallery of clients. Both lawyers have gained a certain amount of notoriety, prominence and wealth.

Atty. Topacio’s client list rival’s that of Cohn:

–Cassandra Li Ong, closed in circle of Alice Guo aka Guo Hua Ping; suspected as spy of PROC illegally ran as Mayor while not being a Filipino citizen. Both Ong and Guo are accused of being involved with laundering billions of pesos from online gambling and scams.

–Congressman Arnie Teves accused as the mastermind behind the Pamplona massacre in March 2023. Intended as a targeted assassination of Negros Oriental Governor Degamo but also killed 9 others.

–Religious leader Apollo Quiboloy accused of human trafficking, rape and child sexual abuse.

Homosexual Hypocrisy

One of the worst things about Roy Cohn was his hypocrisy. He was outwardly homophobic as portrayed here in THE APPRENTICE. In the 1950s he gained prominence as legal counsel to Senator Joe McCarthy who started the blacklist of accused communists in Hollywood. They also targeted homosexuals and threatened to not only expose but arrest them. This is the topic of docu WHERE’S MY ROY COHN? Going into his upbringing in depth: “His father gave him the language through law and politics to express his shame (and self-loathing).”

In his later years which was covered in THE APPRENTICE, it was a known secret that he had a male lover Peter Fraser played by Aidan Gouveia. There were also explicit gay sex scenes and wild orgies in Cohn’s home. Showing the hedonism and excess of New York in the 70s and 80s.

In the Mike Wallace interview, he was confronted not only about homosexuality but also his having AIDS. Which he vehemently denied. With Cohn’s proximity and influence on Nixon, Reagan etc. he could have easily steered public funds and awareness in dealing with the AIDS epidemic. Saving thousands of lives. But since he could not get over his own self-hate and hypocrisy, he hid his homosexuality and condition until his death.

Jeremy’s Strong Performance

Jeremy Strong’s version of Roy Cohn was far more sinister than Al Pacino’s. Pacino played Cohn in ANGELS IN AMERICA a TV movie by HBO in 2003. This early on, I’m campaigning for a Best Supporting actor Oscar win for Strong.

You can make the argument that Jeremy had the chance to portray a younger version of Roy at the height of his aggressiveness. The realism went as far as the same haircut and slow, somewhat slurring, nasal voice. Strong and Cohn also shared the same deep set eyes, flat cheekbones and skinny frame. Roger Stone himself described it as the most realistic portrayal he’s seen. Stone is also in the movie as a young political acolyte, played by Mark Rendall.

Soundtrack Influence

One of Jeremy Strong’s most unforgettable roles is Kendall Roy in SUCCESSION series. The show has influenced this movie too. The sequence above has so much more to reveal. In between Cohn’s rules are cuts of how he deals with cases, Cohn telling off the DOJ, judges as examples of the rules. The soundtrack of that sequence was eerily similar to the SUCCESSION main theme by composer Nicholas Britell.

Not saying composers ripped it off. But more as evidence of SUCCESSION theme’s iconic status. Combining 17^th century melodies with hip-hop. Britell wanted to show ‘the duality of absurdity and the gravitas, seriousness of the halls of power’. Which definitely applies in this film as well.

Sebastian Stan as Sane Trump

Sebastian Stan wouldn’t be the first choice for most not because of his abilities but rather he may be too good looking. Having played Winter Soldier in CAPTAIN AMERICA. He was requested by director Ali Abbasi to gain weight for the role. Even showing off the gut in an Instagram post. To Stan’s credit he definitely pulled it off.

The movie also reveals Trump’s obsession with looks having a liposuction procedure. And one where the bald spot on his head was surgically removed. This was in the latter part. For me, Stan played him exceedingly well. Portraying what seems to be a ‘normal’ version, especially in the beginning. The scenes where he was tasked to pick up rent from tenants made him appear more relatable. Having an everyday job. As opposed to the caricature we see today.

Stan’s performance was more internal and subtle as opposed to the bombastic Roy from Jeremy Strong. Stan was able to show the slow descent, from a somewhat normal Trump to the one slowly getting drunk with money and power. Stan is expanding his acting prowess.

Irony of Maria Bakalova

Ivana played by Maria Bakalova, was an extremely ironic casting choice. She was the same actress who caught Trump loyalist Rudy Giuliani in a compromising position for BORAT 2.

Sacha Baron Cohen didn’t invent the Mockumentary but is the most visible proponent of it. It’s a combination of a feature film and documentary. Where Sacha Baron Cohen as Borat and Maria Bakalova as his daughter are portraying characters. While ‘embedded’ in the real world. Bakalova presented herself as a minor to Giuliani and flirting with him to have sex. It went so far as Rudy unzipping his pants in a hotel room with Bakalova. And Borat suddenly bursting out of a closet to surprise them before anything ever ‘happened’.

Ivana’s Mysterious Death

No denying at such a young age Bakalova has exhibited remarkable acting abilities. Not to mention courage in that dangerous ‘scene’ in BORAT 2. She has grown by leaps and bounds. Evident in her portrayal of a sophisticated Ivana, a woman who has her own mind. Hence the tumultuous relationship with Trump.

The film, however, did not deal with the later mysterious circumstances of Ivana’s death. And her grave put in a corner of a Trump golf course, unkept with weeds growing around it. Donald Trump Jr making the excuse of a faulty staircase in his mother Ivana’s flat as the cause of her death. Raising even more questions since Donnie himself is in ‘construction’.

One of the most controversial scenes: Ivana’s marital rape by Trump was only too believable. Given what we know now about him. Especially after the E. Jean Carrol case, which he lost via an $88.3 million dollar penalty. Where the judge and jury determined Trump had raped her.

Dementing Trump

Today we see that Trump has gotten worse in every sense of the word. In almost every aspect: morally, physically and mentally. Even within the movie, Trump was taking deceit and unscrupulous business practices way worse than Roy Cohn ever did. There’s a point that Trump, the student was overcoming the teacher.

Although clearly Trump was already racist, homophobic, misogynist, dishonest back then. He’s way worse now. One of the most recent example is simulating a hand job on a mic stand, then opening his mouth miming a blowjob in a rally in Milwaukee Wisconsin, November 2, 2024. This was after complaining of problems with the microphone and then threatening to ‘knockout the crew that set up’ the sound system.

Malignant Narcissist

Trump is described as a malignant narcissist with psychotic tendencies. An assessment by Dr Harry Segal, Senior Lecturer the Cornell University Department of Psychology and in the Psychiatry Department at Weill Cornell Medicine.
