The first night of ALIWAN 2023 last July 13 (Thursday) was looking glum as downpours all across the metro threatened to halt any kind of festivity. Then floods started to cause havoc soon after. ALIWAN, however, as the Grand Festival of Champions, is not so easily defeated.

Organizers had already set up a grand stage (bigger than previous years) on the exterior, where it is usually. Although, the stage was partially covered, the crowd that watched was left to the mercy of the elements.

The Manila Broadcasting Complex, however, had an ace up its sleeve: The Aliw Theater. They wisely moved the concert in the comfortable, airconditioned theater, also the famous home of Ballet Manila.

The attendees managed to fill the venue that was rocked by some of the best bands in the country: SUNKISSED LOLA, IMAGO, GRACENOTE, HEY JUNE! And a unique dance act in OLD FANTASY.

Called BENTE NAMAN JAM Pasakalye Concert, it highlights the best OPM artists. Because of the line up There seemed to be a greater emphasis on rock / pop genre, than previous years, which was welcomed by the young audience.

By the end of the night, the skies had cleared up and was a great sign for the next two days:
Reyna Ng Aliwan Pageant (7pm, July 14) and Grand Parade and Street Dance Competition (5pm, July 15). Although as a precaution, they may still hold the Pageant inside Aliw Theater, so make sure to find out once you’re there. The entrance is free and open to the public.

Imago’s new lead singer Kharren ‘Kurei’ Granada, asked the crowd inside the packed Aliw Theater to bring out their cell phones to light up the venue. You could see the each light, as evidence of the multitudes of people watching. It was as if she couldn’t believe how well attended the storm struck concert was. And it made the people inside feel happy too.

Of course, the number inside the Aliw theater can’t match the potential crowd size, outside which would spill into Roxas Boulevard. BUT what the night proved the ‘show must go on’ spirit and resilience Filipinos are known for.

In the line-up, IMAGO has the most established history stretching to the early 2000s. Having changed lead singers several times. Almost like a cheerleading anthem they performed the signature TARALETS! Which livened up the place.
