On the 20^th year anniversary of ALIWAN, the Reyna Ng Aliwan Pageant builds on its reputation of discovering international winners.

Cebu City’s #4 Kiara Liane Wellington (representing Sinulog Festival) won the prestigious Reyna Ng Aliwan crown. Kiara, incidentally also earned Best in Evening Gown Award the night before.

The Special Awards were given out on the Reyna Ng Aliwan Pre Pageant Competition, July 14 (Aliw Theater). While, the Grand Prize winners were announced July 15, 2023 Awards Night along with the announcement of Street Dance and Float Competitions. (See full list of awardees with cash rewards below)

Why Cebuanas Dominate

There are 2 major reasons why Cebuanas have dominated Aliwan over the years. The first being genealogy, there’s a strong Spanish bloodline mixed with Filipino and Chinese that creates that wonderful specimen of Cebuana beauty.

Which can range from Pilita Corrales with strong Spanish features, to today’s Multimedia Idol / Chinita Princess – Kim Chiu, who is of Chinese descent. BOTH, however, are outspoken and proud BISDAK. Short for Bisayang Dako (Genuine Visayan) who incorporate their Cebuano dialect in their live performances.

Second, is the high level of competition within the Sinulog Festival. Since it’s a fest that is very well established, competing districts already have a strong recruitment and training process. They are filtered and trained by the time their chosen candidate reaches Reyna Ng Aliwan.

Nicole Borromeo Triumphs

Among the list of Reynas above, Nicole Borromeo has the distinction of the only one being ‘dethroned’, or stripped of the title. This is because of having joined concurrent pageants: Miss Teen Philippines and Miss Millennial (in 2019). Borromeo was in the process of joining Miss Millennial when she was tapped by the Sinulog Foundation for Aliwan. Winning the Sinulog Queen (as she did) does not automatically qualify for Aliwan.

Other Reyna candidates also joined said pageants, the difference being Nicole actually won the ALIWAN Crown. Panagbenga Festival’s Roi Neeve Comanda of Baguio was then chosen to replace her.

Not one to dwell on setbacks, Nicole trained further and gathered enough courage to join Binibining Pilipinas. She then earned the Binibining International title in 2022. Nicole is one of many Reynas to either win major titles here or abroad: Chelsea Fernandez (Miss Philippines Earth-Water 2019/Binibining Pilipinas Globe 2022), Marla Alforque (Miss Earth Philippines 2018), Cynthia Thomalla (Miss Eco International 2018) and Miss Philippines Earth 2014 Jamie Herrel and many, many more, as mentioned above.

Incidentally, Herrel also hosted the Pre Pageant Competition along with DJ Nick of Easy Rock.

One of the big winners is #13 Kristine Billy Tabaday of Ayat Festival (La Union Province) who is 1^st Runner Up earning her a P75,000 cash prize. On top of which she received a total of 4 coveted Special Awards: Miss Charm, Miss Photogenic, Best in Swimsuit and Miss White Rose. Totaling P70,000 from the special prizes.

Not surprisingly, Kristine multitasks in East West Bank as administrative assistant and marketing representative. She is also an ambassador for the Philippine National Red Cross La Union chapter.

She charmed judges during the Q&A. ACS Manufacturing Corp National Sales Manager Vincent Supetran asked her, ‘Which world renowned celebrity do you admire the most and why?”

She said, “The celebrity I admire is Lea Salonga. Because she exudes purity and confidence. I believe she is a woman who represents herself with confidence, grace and power. She was able to represent herself not just locally but in the international stage. And as an ALIWAN candidate I can be like her even if I’m not a singer. As an ALIWAN candidate we do not just entertain, but we become true to ourselves.”

Best in Festival Costume

Among the trends started in ALIWAN years back are their elaborate costumes. Best in Festival Costume has become one of the most coveted awards with a P20,000 cash prize. It was won by #14 Natalya Margaret Lindsay representing the Tagultol Fishing Festival of Atimonan, Quezon. Lindsay also flashed her winning pearly whites to obtain Miss Unique Smile.

Nat came in a spectacular blue and white costume, reminiscent of Mera in AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM showing this December. She has reigned as Quezon Province’s Bb Niyogyugan since 2019 and is a member of the Atimonan Vocal Ensemble.

She is also among the three 2^nd Runners up that includes: #19 Patricia Marie Mendiola of the Pasayahan Festival (Lucena City) and #17 Ghenesa Marie Mueller of the Udyakan Festival (Kabankalan, Negros Occidental). Mueller was also voted for the Netizen’s Choice Award which had a P10,000 prize.

Digital Queens

The COVID pandemic was a disaster for the whole world. The Reyna Ng Aliwan, however, managed to adjust by organizing the Aliwan Fiesta Digital Queens for 2020, 2021 and 2022. Each, was a competition from candidates around the country. Albeit conducted, online. Causes have also been a point of emphasis for this competition.

Marikit Manaois’ Advocacies

Each Digital Queen has her own advocacy Jannarie Zarzoso is a Psoriasis Awareness and children’s rights activist. As an accountancy major, Shanyl Kayle Hofer encourages small businesses or startup businesses in Cebu. From CDN Inquirer.net

Of note are the advocacies of the most recent Aliwan Fiesta Digital Queen 2022.

Marikit Manaois of Baguio City is a strong believer in Zero Waste Management. She has gone to several places around the country to help educate people on it. Also, specifically endorsed the SOLID WASTE ON WHEELS program in her home base of Baguio.

She also chose to donate her P50,000 cash prize to Helping Hands Healing Hearts Ministries. HHM is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) for children in crisis situations who need a safe refuge and assistance. They provide psychosocial support, medical help and also processes adoptions.

Beauty, Brains and Heart

#6 Mariela Bianca Acob, Tan Ok Ni Ilocano Festival (Ilocos Norte) was able to share key words from the Ilocano dialect and exhibited pride of place in her home province. While #11 Kisha Honey N. Panis, Pintados Festival (Leyte, Eastern Visayas) shared that she was discriminated upon because of her complexion.

The perfect color that suits my personality is the color of my gown which is blue. The color blue represents a lot of meaning. Because one of the highlights of Ilocos Norte is their love for the color blue. We were able to create our essence. Such as na bileg (stronger), na adtor (resilient), na tan ok (we are great). We come from the greater home which is Ilocos Norte, and these three essences are the perfect meaning of the color blue.

Judge: Cherry Veric, Fashion Designer to the Stars: Why would you make a good Reyna Ng Aliwan?

#11 Kisha Honey N. Panis, Pintados Festival (Leyte, Eastern Visayas): The Reyna Ng Aliwan is someone who bears innermost responsibility. And safeguards the organization’s reputation, serving the people and her community. Of course an empowered Reyna Ng Aliwan Queen is someone who doesn’t stop achieving her dreams, no matter how many people doubt her. Because I grew up in a world where my kind of skin, my color was never considered to be beautiful. I was told I don’t deserve to join a beauty pageant. That I won’t win in any competition. I was discriminated and I was put down.

But because I was surrounded by people who always motivates me, I can do it. I am now here in Reyna Ng Aliwan stage, continuing to achieve my dreams. Proving myself to people who doubted me. That my color will never be a hindrance for me, to achieve my dreams.

As a candidate I stand here to give a message to all young girls and women. They should surround themselves with people who appreciate you for who you are. And would encourage you to chin up and walk taller, think better. Don’t stop dreaming no matter how people put you down. Instead show yourself prove yourself to them and let them know they were wrong.
