FANS of all ages may just camp out of DIAMOND Hotel, AEROSMITH’s official residence even before the legendary band arrives here for their May 8^th, 2013 concert at the Mall of Asia Arena. Our very own legendary PINOY band: RIVERMAYA will be fronting them. PULP Magazine’s May issue has AEROSMITH on its cover. SLASH featuring Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators will be in SMART ARANETA on MAY 4^th.

NO less than PULP’s Editor in Chief Vernon Go, wrote a comprehensive feature on them starting with their music from the 1970’s and a complete album listing from 1973 onwards. There’s no hyperbole with the Vernon’s claim that AEROSMITH may be the biggest American band to ever visit Philippine shores. In terms of longevity and hits they exceed Metallica and BON JOVI. The Beatles in the 1960’s is and always will be a British export so the claim holds true.

Personally, I’d heard of AEROSMITH but was not a metal head like Vernon. I was more into punk and the alternative, new wave genre. I was converted along with millions of other fans when they literally made music history in 1986. Even though the roots are basically the same between rock and rap- blues, soul which also happen to be African American. There has always been a gaping divide between metal and rap/ hip-hop groups.

Our very own Francis Magallona often spoke about not having musical prejudice where metal fans shouldn’t diss hip-hop and vice versa. Owing to his versatility the godfather of Filipino Rap also successfully played original metal songs in his album. Magallona also collaborated with rock icons in “Unstrung Heroes” with Ely Buendia; “Sapot”, with project band Planet Garapata, which included Raimund Marasigan, Jeng Tan and Mark Lakay, who would later form SANDWICH.

So when the legendary metal / rock and roll band AEROSMITH collaborated with hip-hop originals RUN DMC, no one could really imagine or foretell how people or fans would accept it. No one could even conceive of it ever happening. The music video for the song WALK THIS WAY although crude looking by today’s standards explained it all. It was AEROSMITH’s Joe Perry rehearsing a guitar rift. A thin cardboard wall separated them from RUN DMC. The rappers were banging on the wall screaming complaining at how noisy the screeching guitars were and they’d get back by blasting their drums and bass.

Steven Tyler got so infuriated he used a mic stand to pierce a hole through the wall. Then popping his head through singing “WAAALK THIS WAAAY, talk this way…now gimme a kiss…” Cut to RUN DMC invading an AERSOMITH concert breaking through a silhouette with a close up of their Adidas Superstar sneakers. The video was so iconic and successful that Adidas actually released a commemorative 1986 RUN DMC model years later. My brother Noel around the same time got into trouble with my mom because he spent a ridiculous amount of money buying a similar pair: the Adidas KAREEM ABDUL JABBAR. The only difference was that it’s high cut and the stripes are white

The video ends with Steven Tyler dancing with rappers Rev Run and D.M.C. The success of WALK THIS WAY was so huge for both groups even though they had already firmly established themselves in their own genres. They showed that two polar opposite genres could collaborate successfully.

RUN DMC is the first rap group to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. AEROSMITH was this super group from the 70s. What WALK THIS WAY did was to infuse this energy and youth into the band. It showed their willingness to grow and evolve. Their succeeding albums received even more critical success. I remember my cousin Adrian Apostol owning several AEROSMITH albums. And I also bought PUMP in 1989 the same year when they won a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a duo or group. In 1993 Robin Williams had this huge hit of a movie called MRS. DOUBTFIRE, which used AEROSMITH’s, smash DUDE LOOKS LIKE A LADY. No doubt, there will be this huge explosive party when they come into town on May 8^th.

TONY STARK (Robert Downey Jr) is tied up without the IRONMAN suit and is stripped of accessories. Tony’s DORA THE EXPLORER watch beeps incessantly on the table. Guard1 (Stephen L. Cohen) picks it up. Tony: Careful there that’s a limited edition watch…break it you bought it. (steps on it and crushes it) Bad guy1: I guess I bought it.

Tony: OK that wasn’t mine to give away that belonged to a friend’s sister and that’s why I’m gonna kill you first. Guard: What are you gonna do to me you’re zip tied to a bed? Tony: This…(flips both hands open and nothing happens) Guards laugh. Tony: trust me you’re going to be in a pool of your own blood in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! Haaaa! (nothing happens) Guard: How did we get this shift? Tony: I’m gonna give you a chance to escape. Put down your weapons tie yourselves to those chairs. I’ll let you live. In 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! Bang you should be gone by now. (Nothing happens) Guard2 (Mark Kubr): We are beyond terrified. Tony: Here it comes, 3, 4…! Guard1: Shuuut uuup!

The IRON MAN glove comes flying through the window and attaches itself to Tony’s hand and instantly stuns both guards. Another piece of IRON Man suit comes flying through the window, a right boot. Tony is wildly floating in the air unbalanced with only one jet boot and one glove firing repulsor rays. Tony asks himself, “Where’s the rest?” dozens of bad guys storm into the room.

Before anything else, watch out for a number of cinemas copying the 3D package of drinks and popcorn. I made the mistake of going to the nearest mall and was sorely disappointed. I got used to the comfy, thick padded chairs that lift up your feet in Newport Cinemas in Resort’s World. The popcorn and choice of drinks in EASTWOOD City Mall were also generous. So when I went to another mall and got half the popcorn and drinks, it was irritating. 3D quality could have also been way better; it might as well have been 2D. Lucky China Town Mall would also be a great choice for those in downtown Manila. If you’re in Manadaluyong / EDSA, you can’t go wrong with Shang Rila Plaza mall with its new EAST Wing which will also have new cinemas.

Action sequences just get wilder and more explosive with each installment of this franchise, this tops them all. Remarkably IRON MAN 3 is the sequel that shows the humanity and frailty of Tony Stark played by no less than Robert Downey Jr. Among all the MARVEL heroes, its Robert’s humor and panache that seems to beat out all other super heroes. That includes THOR’s Chris Hemsworth and Captain America’s Chris Evans.

Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) actually gets to wear the IRON MAN suit (Mark 42) in IRON MAN 3. Catch this explosive film at Newport Cinemas in Resort’s World, EASTWOOD City Mall, Lucky China Town Mall and Shang Rila Plaza mall.

In spite of all the incredible high tech sequences, the film manages to highlight the human factor, not the gadgets. That’s where Robert Downey’s performance comes in. He’s not the fearless and invincible super hero. He has to deal with his own fears and traumas especially with someone who went through so much in THE AVENGERS.

We always see Tony in his advanced laboratory talking to JARVIS whose voice happens to be Paul Bettany (of PREIST, BEAUTIFUL MIND and LEGION). His undeniable British accent and voice is perfect for the smart ass android. Older fans would appreciate Tony going into MacGyver mode. He has to be able to make use of materials on hand to defeat the enemy, a terrorist called the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). Sir Ben who has been knighted just happens to be another Brit who has an even more prestigious character list- GANDHI, SCHINDLER’S LIST and HUGO among others.

Gwyneth Paltrow is more central to this sequel. AND YES I wholeheartedly agree with PEOPLE magazine proclaiming her as the most beautiful Woman in the World. In spite of the negative reaction on the web, a lot of fans already agreed with that title way before the magazine cover came out. Others hate her for being so annoyingly perfect. She’s been an adopted daughter of Talavera De la Reina, in Toledo, Spain. She is fluent in both Spanish and French, had a hit song with Huey Lewis and puts up with Tony’s ego! Her character Pepper Potts actually, finally gets to wear the IRON MAN suit here. There may be a possibility in future sequels for her to not only wear her own suit but become a super hero as well.

Don Cheadle as Col. James Rhodes gets to show far better fighting skills than Tony Stark without the suit. Rhodes is not just a sidekick in another IRON MAN unit. His is actually called IRON MAN PATRIOT, wearing the red white blue stripes. It’s the unit that Tony donated to the U.S. government with Col. Rhodes as ‘pilot’. Fans will also fall in love with Ty Simpkins as the young kid Harley who aids Tony in his hour of need.

A great casting choice for me is William Sadler as U.S. President Ellis. For most of his roles he is the antagonist, that’s why it’s intriguing to see him as one of the good guys. He can be extraordinarily creepy. My favorite among them is Kenneth Braun in KINSEY opposite Liam Neeson who’s character literally wrote one of the most comprehensive and earliest, scientifically written books on sex, “Sexual Behavior in the Human Male”. Sadler was able to portray the ultimate pervert; in the book his character was called X because no one can exceed his mind-boggling depravity.

While for most of the film there was a stronger emphasis on the human side Tony, there’s A LOT to crow about for comic book geeks and robot fanatics. There is a host of new IRON MAN suits / robot iterations that they can look out for. One is the JARVIS version where the android voice actually gets a cool IRON MAN robot version. The nomenclature of assigning ‘Mark’ to each new IRON MAN is something Canon camera loyalists will find familiar. The top models like the Canon 5D, 1D, 7D have the Mark II (and so forth) designation of succeeding models.

IRON MAN Mark 38 is a bigger wider, heavier version with 2 canons on both shoulders- heavy lifting suit code named IGOR, Mark 39- sub orbital / Gemini, Mark 40 Hyper velocity suit / Shotgun, Mark 33- enhanced energy suit / Silver Centurion.

Watch all of these new IRON MEN collide with human torches in this latest action packed sequel. All that action and effects really DO need 3D with extra popcorn and soda. Resorts’ World Manila here I come.

This may be the first and last time you see these Armors in action. So watching IRON MAN 3 in all its 3D glory is highly recommended.

For a brief introduction, lets quote Wikipedia:

Iron Man possesses powered armor that gives him superhuman strength and durability, flight, and an array of weapons. The armor is invented and worn by Stark (with occasional short-term exceptions). Other people who have assumed the Iron Man identity include Stark’s long-time partner and best friend James Rhodes; close associates Harold “Happy” Hogan; Eddie March; and (briefly) Michael O’Brien.

The weapons systems of the suit have changed over the years, but Iron Man’s standard offensive weapons have always been the repulsor rays that are fired from the palms of his gauntlets. Other weapons built into various incarnations of the armor include: the uni-beam projector in its chest; pulse bolts (that pick up kinetic energy along the way; so the farther they travel, the harder they hit); an electromagnetic pulse generator; and a defensive energy shield that can be extended up to 360 degrees. Other capabilities include: generating ultra-freon (i.e., a freeze-beam); creating and manipulating magnetic fields; emitting sonic blasts; and projecting 3-dimensional holograms (to create decoys).

In addition to the general-purpose model he wears, Stark has developed several specialized suits for space travel, deep-sea diving, stealth, and other special purposes. Stark has modified suits, like the Hulkbuster heavy armor. The Hulkbuster armor is composed of add-ons to his so-called modular armor, designed to enhance its strength and durability enough to engage the Incredible Hulk in a fight. A later model, designed for use against Thor, is modeled on the Destroyer and uses a mystical power source. Stark develops an electronics pack during the Armor Wars that, when attached to armors that use Stark technologies, will burn out those components, rendering the suit useless. This pack is ineffective on later models, however. While it is typically associated with James Rhodes, the War Machine armor began as one of Stark’s specialty armors.

Mark XV (15): The stealth suit, known as “Sneaky”. It is virtually invisible to enemy early-warning systems. A chrome colored coating on the armor can darken or lighten to match the environment.

Mark XVI (16): The black stealth suit, known as “Nightclub”. Similar to the Mark XVI armor. However, it does not have all of the weapons and is designed for stealth missions

The Godkiller Armor is another suit designed by Tony Stark for space travel. Not nearly as advanced as the Deep Space Armor, the Godkiller is most noticeable for it’s redesigned faceplate that looks unlike the majority of the Iron Man armors. Like the H.A.P.P.Y. suit, the Godkiller Armor also contains a new A.I., this time modeled after Pepper Potts.

Mark XVII (17): CODE NAME- Heartbreaker, Catch IRON MAN3 at Newport Cinemas in Resort’s World, EASTWOOD City Mall, Lucky China Town Mall and Shang Rila Plaza mall

Mark XVII (17) The artillery level RT suit, known as “Heartbreaker”. It has an oversized chest RT, which can fire powerful blasts and can fire narrow or wide beams. It can also generate a repulsor shield for protection.

Mark XLII (42) – is made of separate suit pieces that can individually fly to you and re form as a whole suit around your body. It works from a state of the art chip implanted in your left forearm. With that, all you need to do is concentrate for the suit to come to you and it will. After a fairly tricky trial and error session, we’ve worked out most of the kinks and the Mark XLII is the most advanced suit created to date.

Lilia Bautista Yang, recently passed away at the age of 91. She passed away from Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, which also claimed music icon Francis Magalona last 2009. To my family she has always been more than an aunt, or the sister of my father Joe. She is the tie that binds as matriarch in not just one clan but several: Bautista, Yang, Tong and Cua. Officially she worked until a few weeks from her passing as Financial Consultant to the Sycip, Salazar, Hernandez and Gatmaitan. SSHG is the law firm that she helped build from her hiring as a young 22 year old in 1945 by founder Alexander Sycip.

Faith in the Youth

In the firm she was fondly called ‘Mother Lily’ because of her generosity and kindness to not just the legal staff but even more to the non-legal staff. While Mother Lily Monteverde is better known as film producer, Lilia Yang was considered a mother to the luminaries of the legal profession. Mother Lily recently spoke in support of one of her early discoveries in Gretchen Barreto, Sen. Bong Revilla, Ogie Alcasid and countless others.

Lilia B. Yang’s ‘discoveries’ on the other hand include former Solicitor General Frank Chavez, Sen. Franklin Drilon, current Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Ben Caguioa and even former TV5 Pres. Atty Ray Espinosa who is now Associate Director of First Pacific Company, DOTC USEC Jojo Lotilla and countless more. Lilia was a strong influence on their young careers and had life long friendships with all of them.

Senator Franklin Drilon was then a young lawyer in 1971 when he worked for Sycip. Even then he described her as “a very jolly and engaging person. We revolved around her.” He believed that she played an important role in the firm, “She was a stabilizing group in the law firm before. In Sycip law as you know were composed of superstars and therefore extremely difficult to manage. But Lily provided the motherly influence for all of us. Every person hired by the firm would pass through her as a member of the legal staff or to hire you in the non-legal staff. So she’d know everyone. She’d make it a point to find out how each one is that’s how I remember Lily Yang.”

Atty. Frank Chavez said, “She was an inspiration to us young lawyers. She gave us guidelines on how to go about our work form day one to the time we were able to earn our spurs so to speak. She was there not only for the administrative aspect but also for the logistics. She was always there to lend a helping hand to all of us. She never turns people down. She always accommodates people as I said; the essence of Lily B Yang is kindness, sharing and solicitation for the welfare of other people. She was a woman for others.”

Carlos Lopez was a young lawyer in the 90s. After working for the firm for some time he had considered leaving but LBY convinced him to stay. Immediately the following year he became a partner. Lopez said, “When I first worked for Sycip I knew of no other firm. She was Banco De Yang as some of us knew her. Mrs. Yang took a special liking to the young lawyers because she saw in the youngest lawyers the promise of the firm.”

Honesty, Integrity and Humility

Lilia’s reputation of honesty and integrity was built upon decades of relationships with financial institutions. Her humility and amiable approach has also helped her get high profile clients. Her fluency in both Mandarin and Fookien earned the trust of clients from the Chinese community. Today SSHG has become the biggest law firm in the country boasting of 145 lawyers, far removed from those days in Alex Sycip’s garage.

Former Justice Florentino Feliciano said, “Lily was present when the office was first started immediately after the Second World War. The office started by Alex Sycip first office was a garage in their house. Lily took care of everything that was not a matter of law. The office would not have been able to start without Lily. She is the concrete that held the firm together. And Lily remained there up to the time she died.”

Justice Feliciano’s own career in SSHG reminded him of LBY’s constancy, “I joined the office at the end of 1960 she was already there. It was she who played a very important role in keeping the office together as it grew. I did not feel uncomfortable when I left the office in 1986 to go to the Supreme Court because although Alex had passed away Lily was there. Lily was part of this very important event that held the firm together. She remained there ‘til the very end.”

Former managing partner Atty Llewelyn Llanillo said, “She is the symbol of stability in the firm. She is our connection to the past. The mere fact that she is there gave the impression that Sycip will forever be there because she was there from the very beginning. She is a truly significant icon in the office.” Llanillo is currently one of the senior legal consultants of the firm.

Legendary Generosity

For her devotion to the firm she married at a later age in spite of having a lot of suitors in her youth. Even though she and her loving husband Yldefonso Yang were not blessed with children, she became a second mother to many more people with whom she met. While not having biological children thousands of employees, inaanak claim her as their mother who was caring enough to consistently help. The list is long from tuition fees to hospital bills.

Atty Llanillo recalled the time he first worked for the firm in the mid 70s, “I remember during my first years in the office I think those with me now began as associates. There are no more founders at the office at this time. We used to line up every Friday outside her office to make vale. I was receiving 650 pesos a month. So every Friday money has run out already so we would go there and sign a small piece of paper and write payable next week or next payday. Until finally over the years our compensation increased I managed to not go and line up any more. She was always someone to rely on. When we were in trouble we’d run to her not only for money but advice.”

Abet Guillermo is one of hundreds who were personally interviewed and recruited by Lily. He remembered being able to start immediately the day after the interview in 1981 in the records department. She was unforgettable because she helped him get back on his feet after a fire had consumed his home and she took the lead in raising money from the office. He also credits her for helping put his three kids to school. According to him she would use her own personal funds when the bonus of the firm’s employees were delayed, “Pag nadedelay bonus namin inaadvance niya. Magkano yon diba?”

One of her greatest achievements according to Jonathan Pascual is her willingness to represent and speak in behalf of the non-legal staff, “She was able to create a harmonious relationship between legal and non-legal. And also she represents the non-legal staff in terms of advocacies in enlightenment, in terms of knowledge experience. I really witnessed her good leadership. She’s a leader of the highest order, one of a kind mother, one of a kind leader. It was a sudden loss but we pray that Mrs. Yang will find rest. She’s done a lot of things we will feel the difference now that she’s gone away from us.” Pascual worked in the HR department for 13 years directly under Lily’s supervision.

Real Love Teams

Mother Lily Monteverde was also known for her love teams such as William Martinez and Maricel Soriano, Gabby Concepcion and Snooky Serna. Mother Lilia Yang also delved into match making although not for film or entertainment purposes but for true wedded bliss. Among them are Atty Butch Medalla, his wife Kriselle, Randy Salazar and Lulu Apostol. Lulu then in the late 1980s was a young and pretty accountant under LBY’s wing. Lulu had a lot of admirers. But the mentor and matchmaker saw the young but shy lawyer Randy Salazar as a perfect match thus gave her go signal.

The couple is now one of the more prominent figures in the Filipino community in Hong Kong. Randy is a barrister while Lulu is Executive Director of Allied Bank. LBY’s example in helping others has rubbed off on Lulu. She spends her weekends volunteering for the Bayanihan foundation for domestic helpers and other OFWs. Initially they were assisting Filipina domestic helpers but have also expanded to domestic helpers of other nationalities, such as Indonesians, Indians and Bangladeshis.

Devotion to God and Love for family

In all of the praise she received during her lifetime, she always credited her faith in God. She tried to instill in us her family, a deeper connection and relationship with the Lord. Every time she would bring our whole family abroad, be it to the U.S., New Zealand or Hong Kong, her requirement is to attend mass everyday. Because of her deep faith, she took on the responsibility of caring for her siblings and even their families when they grew up.

The world will not be the same without you, Tita Lily. I quote my uncle George Apostol who said, “There will be no farewells there will be no goodbyes between the two of us. I can always assure you will always be in my heart forever. And I will cherish all the good memories that we’ve had. Thank you Tita Lily.”

If there’s anything that Lilia B Yang was known for apart from her generosity is her love for food. Last December 9, 2012, Maggie Yum threw her a lavish advanced birthday bash at the Summer Palace in EDSA Shangri-la Hotel. My aunt’s birthday is actually on December 26 and I had never seen her as happy as I did on that day.

Maggie’s gesture was doubly touching, as she is one of my aunt’s many adopted daughters. Her whole name is Magdalen Yum and is the daughter of family friend Ernest and Mary Yum who immigrated to Hong Kong from Manila. Her father Ernest believed that the quality of education in the Philippines is superior and wanted Maggie to go back here for college. Tita Lily volunteered to let her board at her home and took her in.

Maggie took up Accounting in Ateneo De Manila University wanting to follow her idol Lily’s foot steps who was already Financial Director of Sycip, Salazar Hernandez Gatmaitan Law Firm. Maggie eventually became First Vice President Investments at Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

Knowing full well of Lily’s love for Chinese food Maggie wanted to give her a truly memorable meal and thought of the Summer Palace at EDSA Shangri-la Hotel. We had our weekly lunches in Gloria Maris and Choi Garden both in the Greenhills area. But Maggie wanted something even more special. Tta Lily’s closest colleagues and relatives were there, Atty. Andy Gatmaitan and family, former Justice Feliciano and wife Virginia, Bonnie Sycip and family and Randy Salazar.

If there was one film that should be seen in 3D Star Trek Into Darkness should be it. While space travel is unaffordable and travelling faster than the speed of light is still impossible, watching it in 3D is the next best thing. For this you cannot settle on cinemas pretending to give 3D. You have to go to the real thing at Newport Cinemas in Resort’s World Manila, EASTWOOD City Mall, Lucky China Town Mall and Shang Rila Plaza mall with its new EAST Wing, which will also have new cinemas. Make sure to hold on, every time Kirk asks Scotty to go into warp you’re travelling faster than the speed of light.

One of the main distinctions from Star Wars franchise is that Star Trek is based more on science fiction theory. Two of the most successful science fiction franchises are often compared. While Star Wars is from a galaxy far away, Star Trek is based on the future of our planet, humanity if and when we DO get our acts together and develop intergalactic travel etc. What would happen then politically, what would our relationship be with other alien races etc ? Creator Gene Roddenberry created a fascinating universe with charismatic characters, that to this day captures audiences.

In the action sequence mentioned above, Spock mentions the prime directive. Cumberbatch is more known as the modern version of the most famous detective in “Sherlock” TV series and is also part of The Hobbit films as The Necromancer. Intergalactic communication is possible with Scotty holding what looks like a cell phone (literally unli calls and unli distance). As opposed to Kirk just tapping their insignias on their uniform to communicate in past versions. An exciting fight scene ensues between Spock and Kahn on a flying car going through the city. The Vulcan Pinch figures prominently in this scene.

Another unforgettable scene is when Kirk and Kahn try to get on another ship USS Vengeance old school, without the benefit of the transporter room. They jettison themselves in suits and have a latch open in other ship. They fly through space filled with debris that can not only block their way but kill them. Smaller particles hit Kirk’s faceplate, endangering him through the process.

While it’s easy to just enjoy the action and effects, there are quite a few political statements. There’s a strong reference to 911 near the end of the film. They chose to have the terrorists not from an outside force but from someone within. Science, politics, war, the military they all come together. Star Trek is more than just fiction, but what could be. Just like the ancients exposed to technology, we shape our own future with what we see and think of today.

The ship arguably gained its status as the most famous space-exploration vessel in history due to its historic five-year mission from 2264-2269. During this mission, Enterprise encounted the Romulans for the first time since the Romulan-Earth conflict, engaged the robotic “Planet Killer” vessel, traveled back in time to 20th-Century Earth, and played host to Khan Noonien Singh, a product of late-20th Century genetic engineering who once fought in the Eugenics Wars.

Kirk’s Enterprise had a crew of 430, 14 science labs, an observation deck, a massive lower deck which included main engineering, and a shuttle bay. The ship’s armaments included forward phaser banks and photon torpedoes.

For millions of fans Superman is one of the most recognizable characters in comic books and film. MAN OF STEEL by Zack Snyder is an explosive, action driven update to a well-loved icon. At the same time it also has a logical and more relevant storyline that audiences today can relate to. Screenwriters David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan did a fantastic job in this regard. Chris Nolan wrote and directed INCEPTION and DARK KNIGHT.

This is no mean feat because SUPERMAN THE MOVIE produced in 1978 by Alexander Salkind was such a monumental success that its lead star Christopher Reeve has become the face of Kal El in the minds of so many fans. Everything from the casting, Gene Hackman played Lex Luthor, Marlon Brando as Jor El, to the special effects, story and music by John Williams gained both critical and commercial acclaim. Countless remakes on television and film have forever been compared to the trilogy of movies that Reeve made famous. I remember seeing it as a child in the early 1980s on Betamax. I only saw the re mastered version on HBO last year. I was even more impressed at how convincing the special effects were without the CGI that we’ve gotten so used to in recent years.

It’s the same problem that George Lucas had with the first STAR WARS films- ‘New Hope’, ‘Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’. Millions of fans have devoted themselves, inhabited the worlds and have been those characters in their minds because of those iconic films.

Being able to live up to the expectations AND the standards previously set is nearly impossible. To a certain extent BATMAN by Tim Burton starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson was also as memorable as Reeve. Nicholson’s performance made the role of the Joker for the first time more interesting than the title character. That’s why Christian Bale and Heath Ledger’s achievements in those two roles are worthy of praise. Both Batman versions have won Oscars.

MARVEL comic book heroes don’t have as big a problem of having to overcome those achievements in film the way DC’s Superman and Batman have to. Success for the X-MEN franchise, IRON MAN, THE AVENGERS, THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA in recent years is all about the numbers: ticket sales, merchandising as opposed to awards or critical praise.

Gladiator and Elliot Ness

In MAN OF STEEL, Henry Cavill doesn’t have to BE the next Christopher Reeve. There’s enough interest for fans to want to see Russell Crowe cast as Jor El and Costner as the human father Jonathan Kent. Cavill may very well make his own stamp in this iconic character, only time will tell.

One advantage of Russell Crowe is that he is more than capable of handling action scenes with GLADIATOR as one of his most famous films. By the time Marlon Brando was Jor El, he was morbidly obese and more senior. Who wouldn’t want to see Gladiator and former Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius literally kick ass in planet Krypton? And yes, he does get to do so in this movie. Kevin Costner had just as many action filled roles: Elliot Ness in THE UNTOUCHABLES and DANCES WITH WOLVES. Here it’s his dramatic side that shines through.

There is also more screen time for Russell Crowe as Jor El is able to program software that creates a realistic 3D hologram. JOR EL comes alive in ways that Marlon Brando wasn’t able to. The concept of interactive software is easier to understand nowadays.

MORE REALISTIC Superman

If that is at all possible, they have made Superman more human or realistic. That’s the knock on Superman is that he is all-powerful and invincible. One of the major changes is being able to understand what the psychological effects of having his powers and abilities have especially at a young age. This actually makes sense, how would anyone be able to deal with for example super hearing? All these various sounds near and far flood his ears. He wouldn’t have any control over his x-ray vision. Imagine the horrific images and sounds that would wreak havoc on a child.

The lovely Diane Lane is Martha Kent. Catch MAN OF STEEL in Newport Cinemas-Resort’s World Manila, EASTWOOD City Mall, Lucky China Town Mall and Shang Rila Plaza mall.

Again this is where his human parents are given a more important role. Diane Lane is yet another amazing casting choice as Martha Kent. She has a special connection with her son that helps him control his powers.

As part of the more realistic update, there’s also less emphasis on the romance between Lois Lane played by Amy Adams. Margot Kidder’s Lois Lane seems to be a better fit, it has a lot less to do with the acting as to how the character was written.

In SUPERMAN THE MOVIE, Lois Lane has a funnier ‘relationship’ with Clark Kent. There IS a lot more humor in the 1978 version, where Lois insults and berates the bungling Clark Kent and yet melts in the presence of Superman (while not recognizing him without the glasses). Perhaps there will be more romantic chemistry/scenes in the sequel.

MAN OF STEEL is not just a retelling of the same old story but a different story altogether. Krypton is more fully visualized and becomes an example. MAN OF STEEL differentiates it self from other Superman versions because of the deeper exploration of the storyline in the planet Krypton. Casting Russell Crowe affords the role of Jor El better fight and action sequences. Gladiator gets to kick ass on planet Krypton. Henry Cavill as Kal El / Superman doesn’t show up til half the movie. The action starts way before there even was a Superman and that’s ok.

Having director Zack Snyder of 300 fame is a guarantee to all fans that there are fast paced and elaborate action sequences. And he certainly delivered. There will also be a much-awaited sequel to his huge 2006 hit- 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE.

The role of General Zod is also given a greater importance here. Michael Shannon from previous experience is tailor made for it. Shannon played Agent Nelson Van Alden in HBO’s BOARDWALK EMPIRE. He was a religious cop who was into self-flagellation during the era of prohibition. Since most of the police force were in the pockets of the bootleggers, he was the only one not on the take. So when he suspected his partner as corrupt he had no qualms of killing him. Shannon is able to portray insanity in a moralistic self-righteous way for BOTH characters.

For the first time, a Brit is cast as Superman, Henry Cavill (pronounced as travel). His best-known role was of THE TUDORS series. One of Henry Cavill’s favorite films of all time was GLADIATOR. MAN OF STEEL gives him the chance to play his idol’s son. Russell Crowe is also an international actor, being Australian himself.

Apart from them there cast also has other international actors, one of which is young German actress Antje Traue, (pronounced as Ahntye Trow-uh). She plays one of Zod’s officers, Faora Ul. Antje was also recently seen in another sci-fi action film PANDORUM with Dennis Quaid and UFC star Cung Le. Israeli actress Ayelet Zurer (pronounced as EYE-uh-let Zer-AIR) is Jor El’s wife Lara Lor-Van. Ayelet was in ANGELS & DEMONS with Tom Hanks but can also be seen in the hit TV series TOUCH as Rosemary Mathis.

Epic Battle between supermen

By the time Zod reaches earth to look for a grown up Kal El, the action here gets turned up a notch. MAN OF STEEL unlike previous versions is a lot darker and more apocalyptic. The fight scene between Faora Ul and Kal El is particularly violent. Whole blocks of buildings are damaged. The fight also goes so fast because of super speed and flight. The violence far exceeds that of SUPERMAN II with Christopher Reeve also battling other Kryptonians.

Zod and his other soldiers land on earth complete with a special suit of armor. Understandably the atmosphere in Krypton is different and although the air on Earth survivable still takes some getting used to. Kal El arrived as an infant and is already acclimatized to our air. He’s also had a lifetime to master the superpowers that being on earth gives Kryptonians.

Faora Ul battled Kal El along with another figure in a suit but has a dark or covered faceplate. The look is reminiscent of an armor seen in IRON MAN 3. Was the figure an android? Was the suit a response to the popularity of a MARVEL franchise film? We’re not exactly sure but it really made for an explosive fight scene.

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that it’s all action with no substance. Hardcore comic book fans will appreciate seeing planet Krypton’s, culture, science and motivations as a race is fully explored more than previous versions. Sci fi fans will be able to see how and advanced alien technology is visualized. For example interactive 3D technology is taken one-step further. Nano particles take the shape of what needs to be visualized as opposed to screens, like living sculptures.

The Cultural Center of the Philippines will hold an all-day affair on June 22, Saturday, to pay tribute to the life and career of movie legend Mona Lisa. Three of her films (“Giliw Ko,” “Sagur”and “Insiang”) will be shown at Tanghalang Manuel Conde for public viewing, and a reception and book launch for press, friends, and family will be held at the Little Theater lobby at 5 p.m.

The reception will celebrate the actress’ 91^st birthday and the launch of her biography, titled “Mona Lisa: A Portrait (From the Memoirs of a Grandmother),” written and published by her granddaughter, Celine Fabie.

The book tells the story of Mona Lisa’s childhood in California during the Great Depression, her relationships during her early career in the ‘40s, World War II in Manila, her comeback years with Lino Brocka in between her marriage and six children, and how Fabie knew her as the grandchild closest to her.

The biography is edited by Monique Francisco, Ida Anita del Mundo, and screenwriter Clodualdo del Mundo Jr., and printed by ABS-CBN Publishing, Inc., with layout by Cesar Hernando and cover design by Benjor Catindig.

The main event in the evening will be attended by the birthday celebrant herself. Mona Lisa has not made a public appearance since 2005, when she was honored by German Moreno with a star on Eastwood mall’s “Walk of Fame” in Quezon City.

The Philippine Pop Music Fest aims to give Original Pilipino Music a boost by discovering the best songwriters and promoting their work through competition. This year they changed this up by pairing the 12 finalists with more established artists. I was particularly amazed at how perfect the selections were. The talents discovered both in songwriting and performance shows that there is a huge potential and hope for OPM. There was never any doubt of the prevalence of musical talent in our country. We just desperately need a good venue that channels this talent into something productive where we Filipinos can support and promote them.

Often, they would be songs that you would directly identify with the artists: Jose and Wally sang ASKAL by Ganny Brown, a very upbeat, humorous novelty song. Christian Bautista sang a very moving ballad composed by Marlon Barnuevo entitled ARAW, ULAP, LANGIT. Christian is cast as the Prince in Resort’s World Manila’s production of CINDERELLA coming this October.

Yael Yuzon interpreted SEGUNDO by Paul Armesin, which won the MERALCO Special Award which honors the entry that inspires nationalism. The fast rock song is very much like the material that comes from Yuzon’s band Spongecola. The same could be said for Raffy Calicdan’s SPACE which was interpreted by Kean Cipriano of Callalilly and another funky young performer in ANG BANDA NI KLEGGY.

Every finalist had THE perfect interpreter. As far as performances go it was Karylle’s heart-rending interpretation of SAYO NA LANG AKO by the young and talented Lara Maigue who just happens to be a sophomore at the UP Conservatory of Music. Karylle gave the most emotional live performance not just of the night but perhaps the whole year. SAYO NA LANG AKO reached the Top 5. Karylle shared that she was able to use the emotional state for her lead character of CINDERELLA to be shown in RW Manila. The song is about a woman who is not able to express her true feelings for the man she loves.

PHIL POP however is not a singing competition; it’s a songwriting competition. The overall message and music of Thyro Alfaro and Yumi Lacsamana’s DATI performed by Sam Concepcion, Tippy Dos Santos and rapper QUEST, won the hearts’ of the judges. DATI won the Grand prize of P1 million pesos, P500,000 for 1^st Runner Up: KUNG DI MAN composed by Johnoy Danao performed by Ney Dimaculangan and P250,000 for 2^nd Runner Up: PANSAMANTAGAL composed by Jungee Marcelo performed by Julianne Tarroja and Sitti Navarro.

It was a dramatic win for Thyro & Yumi who also reached the finals in the First Phil Pop Fest held last year. At first they were hesitant to have someone else interpret their work since they are primarily hip-hop performers as well. According to Thyro, “We initially wanted Gloc9 to do it but due to scheduling conflicts were not able to get him. When the name of QUEST the rapper came up, I realized he was an even better fit. And as you can see Sam and Tippy worked out for us too.”

The Cinemalaya 2013 opening film is a documentary called JAZZ IN LOVE by Baby Ruth Villarama. It’s about Ernesto Tiglao nicknamed Jazz, a gay 22 year old in Davao who fell in love with middle aged German via facebook. This documentary is able to show real emotion in a way that a feature film can’t. In one part Theo (German guy), Jazz and his brother celebrated their birthdays (only weeks apart) together.

In it, there was this little boy not more than 10 years old. An orphan, he survives by taking care of the videoke machine that people rent for their parties. When everyone else had their fill with the machine, he took the mic and sang DADALHIN made famous by Regine Velasquez, music and lyrics by Tats Faustino.

Hearing the lyrics it could not be more apt with the situation of Jazz and Theo. Jazz has high hopes of going to Germany, changing his life literally: Ang pangarap ko ang ‘yong binubuhay ngayong nagmamahal ka sa akin ng tunay at ng tinig mo’y parang musika. Nagpapaligaya sa munting nagwawala ang sarap nitong pag-ibig.

The brilliant song written and composed by Tats Faustino is about how love can change someone’s life, full of hope and promise. Then reality sinks in, love turns to loss and pain. Lalo na noong sinabi mong dadalhin kita sa ‘king palasyo. Dadalhin hanggang langit ay manibago ang lahat ng ito’y pinangako mo. Dadalhin lang pala ng hangin ang pangarap ko. Nang mawalay ka sa aking pagsinta bawat saglit gabing malamig ang himig ko hanap ang yakap mo…

There was so much more truth hearing an eight year old singing it with sincerity. The foreground was the boy’s innocent face; in the background Jazz would caress Theo’s cheek. The issue wasn’t that they were gay; the question is what will happen to their love? It’s the same with everyone else’s relationship whether straight, gay or whatever. By the end of the song in Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo the audience could not help but applaud the performance of that child.

Docu filmmaker Baby Ruth Villarama in an interview said that she just wanted to capture moments in Jazz life whose full name is Ernesto Tiglao. Life happens and sometimes reality is even more entertaining than any made up story. Just like the moment captured above. Baby Ruth was herself enrolled in the Goethe Institute taking up German classes when she found out the fascinating stories of her classmates. A number of them, like Jazz have met Germans on the net. One of the visa requirements is fluency or working knowledge of German.

Baby Ruth was already shooting another subject when she had problems with permission to shoot details of her life. Switching to Jazz as a subject seemed natural, since he was such an animated personality and had no problems with the shoot along with Theo.

Baby Ruth tapped the services of Dexter Dela Peña as director of photography while also doing camera work herself. Since, it was mostly a run and gun style, just going with Jazz and Theo there were no opportunities to light scenes or block subjects. To achieve this they used the CANON EOS 5D Mark II which allowed them to use lenses with wider apertures 2.8, 1.8 etc. The low light performances of these lenses were amazing having great bokeh or circles of confusion in darker scenes.

Sometimes the two would have intimate conversations silhouetted against street lamps, the lights behind them melt into soft glowing hues. The 5D Mark II setup also allowed them to shoot Davao’s famous fest, the very colorful KADAYAWAN. Dela Peña is one of the young talented cinematographers today. He has 3 other films shot in Cinemalaya: DIPLOMAT HOTEL by Chris Ad Castillo, DEBOSYON by Alvin Yapan and INSTANT MOMMY by Leo Abaya.

Baby Ruth Villarama’s better half is multi awarded film editor Chuck Gutierrez. The successful pair runs VOYAGE Studios, which has been involved in a great number of Cinemalaya projects. She is also executive producer for DEBOSYON and worked as producer most recently for MNL 143 by Emerson Reyes and PALAWAN FATE by Auraeus Solito. She prefers to direct more documentaries in the future. Being able to capture these moments that are intimate, that are real especially in JAZZ IN LOVE help us viewers to see truth in our own lives.

The stars that shone at the FINALS night belonged to the interpreters like Karylle who performed SAYO NA LANG AKO by Lara Maigue and Christian Bautista ARAW, ULAP, LANGIT by Marlon Barnuevo. Both exceptional singers will be the lead in Resort’s World Manila’s production of CINDERELLA this October. The songwriter’s themselves however are more often than not accomplished singers as well. Personally I’m hoping the songwriters get to show their talents in interpreting their own songs as well or jamming with their more famous counterparts. Johnoy Danao for example who wrote KUNG DI MAN interpreted by Ney Dimaculangan earned the SMART Audience Choice Award. Danao is himself a YouTube sensation getting rave reviews from fans and music critics alike. His podcasts are among the most popular among Filipino artists, which has earned him the moniker “Philippines’ Best Kept Secret”.

GANNY BROWN- was a former pastor of the United Pentecostal Church. With 21 years in ministerial service as an evangelist and singer songwriter. He stopped in the ministry and resorted to secular music. He has released two novelty albums which circulated in many parts of Mindanao like Davao, Davao Del Sur, Bukidnon, North and South Cotabato. He is a radio announcer in Kidapawan City and does the rounds performing in local gigs and concerts. Jose and Wally interpreted Ganny’s song ASKAL.

LARA MAIGUE- is a 21-year-old classical and Jazz singer. She was born in a family of musicians. Her dad is a professor at the U.P. College of Music, a conductor and arranger. Her mom is a soprano and was her first classical mentor. In 2006 she became a member of a classical pop group OPERA BELLES. They released their self titled album under SONY Music in 2011. But she’ll be moving forward this year as a solo artist. She’s currently a voice major at the U.P. College of Music and a managing partner of their family’s music school: MAIGUE MUSIC STUDIOS. Karylle interpreted her song SAYO NA LANG AKO.

MYRUS APACIBLE – is a certified Gold Record Artist for the album LOVE CYCLE and the man behind the hits SA ISANG SULYAP MO and PUSONG LITO. Which were used as teleserye theme songs. He is also a producer, vocal arranger and proud advocate of Original Pilipino Music (OPM). He is the project head of the TUNOG NATIN OPM Concert Series, that is conceptualized to promote the appreciation of and rally support for OPM among today’s youth.

RAFFY CALICDAN- is a member of a male group TAKEOFF which earned the Aliw Awards Best New Artist (Group) in 2011 and Best Performance (Group) in 2012. His songwriting used to be only for the group. His recent success came after writing HANDANG UMIBIG MULI for Sarah Geronimo’s ONE HEART album. He also composed and sang the theme of a radio show on BGY LS 97.1 FM entitled WANTED SWEETHEART.

SMART Gilas center Marcus Douthit, in an interview with TV5 Sports’ correspondent Erika Tapalla said he would not be able to play in the finals against IRAN. After a post up move against Kim Jung Soon of South Korea, Douthit re-injured his left shin.

The naturalized 6’11” center who has powered SMART Gilas Pilipinas through out the tournament will be sorely missed. He said, “Its amazing we got the win it’s the heart of the Filipino. No one could have scripted a more dramatic semifinal game at the FIBA ASIAN Championships at the Mall of Asia Arena. The Philippines faced rival South Korea who had eliminated the Filipinos in other international basketball competitions in 1986, 2009 and 2011. But SMART Gilas Pilipinas finally took the monkey off their back by winning a nail-biting game 86-79 off a Jimmy Alapag trey in the last minute.

The Pinoy frontline made up for Douthit’s loss with tenacity underneath the boards and fearless scoring inside the paint. Marc Pingris would be the Best player of the game with 16 points and 10 rebounds. As Douthit sat on the bench Pingris scored a semi hook late in the 2^nd Quarter after Seung Jun Lee was called for a goal tending violation. The next play Pingris got a crucial offensive rebound and shot free throws to cut the Koreans’ lead 36-39 at half time.

The Goethe Institut Philppinen brought renowned German composer Pierre Oser to collaborate with the Manila Composer’s lab. They have been working to create a live soundtrack for the film I DON’T WANT TO BE A MAN screening in the 7^th edition of the Silent Film Festival. The fest runs from August 23-25, 2013 at the Shang Cineplex Shang Rila Plaza, featuring silent films from 6 countries, which include Japan, Germany, Italy, U.S., Spain and the Philippines.

Pierre Oser works as a composer and conductor in the cities of Mainz and Munich. He has created soundtracks for different European TV organizations and productions. Among his works are live telecast of silent films for international festivals and concert halls. Oser dispels the modern notion of silent films, “Its exciting to know there’s a silent film fest in your country. The tradition of music for silent movie has been around for more than a hundred years. Most important thing is that the silent movie was never silent. It was always accompanied by small or bigger groups (of musicians).”

According to him the silent film tradition is closer to theater roots, “The ideal of silent movie is to have live music. It’s very important to understand its live music. Its in the tradition of music theater. Its not like sound film because it s another kind of art. Silent movie is a special kind of art in the tradition of Music Theater.”

Oser explains, “The music has the rule to make the interpretation of the pictures, of the ideas of the director. This is very important to understand, it’s not the same. We also have the chance to work with young composers from U.P. and (Manila) Composer’s Lab and we have young musicians a small group. We’ve created music especially for that film.”

I DON’T WANT TO BE A MAN is directed by Ernst Lubitsch who received an honorary Oscar in 1947 for his distinguished contribution to the art of the motion picture. And was nominated 3 times as Best Director. Goethe Institut Philippinen Dir. Petra Raymond said, “We have a lot of films in our archives that we are excited to show for this and future editions. And we are very grateful to have BROTZEIT the German restaurant here in Shang Rila plaza as our sponsor for this festival.”

The Manila Composer’s Lab was founded by Professor Jonas Baes in 2009 as an organization of young composers and performers dedicated to the development of new music in Southeast Asia. Baes also studied music in Germany and has written extensively on sociology of music among indigenous peoples like the Iraya-Mangyan.

Baes said, “It’s a great honor to be part of this project and I’d like to thank Frau Raymond and Pierre. The Manila Composer’s Lab is a small pool of young composers and young musicians and it’s a great experience for the first time in our lives to work directly with Silent Film which never escapes our imagination.”

The preparations according to Baes have been happening for some time, “Months before Pierre arrived we’ve already been discussing what music we’ll be writing. That will be kind of a challenge for us composers. We are reminded of the time in 1918. That’s the time they just ended the war. Among the best compositions that came out in contemporary Europe at the time was Stravinsky, the soldier’s story. Having that in mind we put up an ensemble that is reminiscent of that ensemble. We also have a violin a trombone and a clarinet together with a piano and a cello.” Baes laso credited the work of composers: Alexander John Villanueva, Marie Luise Calvero, Feliz Macahis and Pat Rodriguez.

At a roadblock, a young police officer Itami, meets his old high school friend Tetsuo, as he makes his way back into Tokyo after a day’s golf. As they rekindle their friendship, Itami finds it odd that Tetsuo is so reluctant to talk about his personal life. One night, Sergeant Miyabe, Itami’s mentor, is seriously wounded in a bank heist. The thieves flee into the night, but one of them is injured and leaves his fingerprints on Miyabe’s sword. One of the criminals is arrested, but remains silent until he commits suicide in prison. Miyabe breathes his last. Itami finds out the fingerprints on Tetsuo’s cigarette lighter matches those on Miyabe’s sword. After the night assault on the criminals’ hideout, Tetsuo succumbed to Itami’s strong sense of mission as a police officer.

One of the best films produced in Italy in the late twenties, La Grazia is based on the short story Di notte ( At night ) written in 1894 by Nobel Prize for Literature Grazia Deledda. The movie is also an adaptation from the libretto of an opera written by Deledda with Claudio Guastalla and Vincenzo Michetti and performed in Rome in 1923. Directed by Aldo De Benedetti, and recently restored, it is about a dramatic love story that takes place in a small village in the heart of Sardinia, Grazia Deledda’s homeland, where the ancient traditions and the strict honor code of the shepherds meet with the unpredictable laws of passion and love.

A handsome stranger (Giorgio Bianchi) comes to a mountain village in Sardinia to inspect lands he has inherited, and promises to marry a beautiful shepherdess (Carmen Boni), who he has fallen in love with. The shepherdess gives birth to a child and is forced to tell the male members of her family, who set out to exact their revenge. Will the harsh laws of vengeance triumph or will the family be reunited around the baby?

Incidentally, she bumps directly into her supervisor, but he fails to recognize her and they drink to brotherhood, “man to man”. This leads to all kinds of complications…

THE MANILA COMPOSERS’ LAB, founded by Professor Jonas Baes in 2009, is an organization of young composers, performers and other enthusiasts dedicated to the development of New Music in Southeast Asia. It aims to reach out and create a network of young composers through its annual workshops and activities. They are based at the University of the Philippines and work in partnership with organizations whose trajectories include the cultivation of New Music praxis unique to Southeast Asia.

Christine is then kidnapped by the love struck Opera Ghost, and Raoul (her fiancé) must search for her in the depths of the Paris Opera House undergrounds.

What makes this find even more extraordinary is the fact that the film seems to bear highly unusual influences from expressionist cinema of the era, something unfamiliar in Filipino cinema history. “Kamera Obskura” is a film within a film, and it challenges the viewers to travel back in time and re-imagine the lost silent cinema heritage in the Philippines.

“As Cine Europa turns 16 it is reaching more Filipinos than ever before with screenings right across the country. With its expansion from three to six cities last year, attendance has increased by a quarter from 29,000 in 2011 to 36,500 in 2012,” said Julian Vassallo, Political Counselor at the EU Delegation to the Philippines.

Cine Europa is an annual gift of the European Union to Filipino audiences hence the free admission to the whole film fest which starts from September 5 to 14 at the Shang Cineplex Premiere Theaters in Shangri La Plaza Mall. The fest goes on to other venues like Cinematheque Baguio City (September 17-22 ), Cinematheque Iloilo City (September 23 -29), Ayala Center, Cebu City (October 4 -6), Liceo de Cagayan University (October 10-13) and Cinematheque Davao City (October 15-20).

In terms of the sheer number of feature films in one festival Cine Europa may be considered as one of the largest film festivals in the Philippines. Vassallo adds, “The fest will present an original, entertaining and thought-provoking set of 21 European movies, while reserving a special place for quality Filipino films.”

The restored classic ORO PLATA MATA by Peque Gallaga will be shown on September 8 at 4pm. While the Cinemalaya opening film JAZZ IN LOVE a well-received documentary by Baby Ruth Villarama will be shown September 14 at 2pm, both at the Shang Cineplex Premiere Theater.

The fest has always been known for the variety of titles, “With numerous award winning European movies including romantic musicals, wartime movies, historical dramas, family comedies and even world class documentaries, there really is something for everyone at Cine Europa 16.”

He also credits the Film Development Council of the Philippines, which has welcomed the fest in other cities through the use of its Cinematheques. According to FDCP Executive Director Teddy Granados, “The Philippine Cinematheque is a vital part of the Sineng Pambansa or National Cinema program. It was designed, and is destined to be, an alternative and accessible venue for classic and contemporary Filipino films, both mainstream and independent for state-of-the-art foreign films sourced through the FDCP’s Film Cultural Exchange Program with other countries.”

Cine Europa has also benefitted from the FDCP’s Film Cultural Exchange Program by being exempted from the MTRCB screening process. The FCEP allows the foreign film to adopt the ratings from its native country. FDCP Chairman Briccio Santos initiated the FCEP as a means to encourage the exchange of films between the Philippines and other countries.

Curious and excited, she decides not to return home at the end of the weekend, so that she can observe how the seeds start to grow. Staying behind alone, Cathy realizes that her parents will be worried and will start looking for her. They are forced to change this life attitude radically though, after Josef meets with David Weiner, the young Jewish son of his former employer, whose family has long since been deported from the town. David is now the only surviving member of his family and has recently escaped from a concentration camp. Hüseyin reassures everyone that he only wants to use it as a holiday home; that he does not want to return there permanently. Canan is afraid to travel; she is pregnant and neither her parents nor her grandparents know. Episodes from the past are meshed with those from the present. Canan tells us how her grandfather eloped with his wife, how he left for Germany to be able to support his wife and children; how he later fetched his family, and what problems he was confronted with upon his arrival in Germany; how the family took their first holiday in Anatolia together and the first signs of alienation. And Dreams of a Life, a documentary that focuses on Joyce Vicent who died in her bedsit above a shopping mall in North London in 2003, and whose body wasn’t discovered until three years later. It is a film about urban lives, contemporary life, and how, like Joyce, we are all different things to different people. Joep (Nils Verkooijen) was always a showing off his i-phone. He gladly paraded a silly selfie right at Akkie’s (Hanna Obbeek) face. In one quick motion she grabbed his i-phone and darted through out the classroom showing the photo to the other girls who started laughing. Even though Joep was enraged she was too quick for him. She even climbed up the table just to evade him trying to get the i-phone back. Joep followed suit climbing on the desk. Just as the teacher came in, Akkie immediately gets back to her seat leaving Joep standing on the desk with his i-phone in hand. “That’s the last time I’ll let you play with your phone” said Ms. Ina Steens (Eva van der Gucht) and confiscates his prized possession.

COOL KIDS DON’T CRY is a very inspiring coming of age film that deals with a lot of very current issues like bullying, women’s roles in sports and even kids coming to grips with terminal illness. Akkie is played by Hanna Obbeek who has a very strong resemblance with Drew Barrymore in her teen years. She has those blue eyes, platinum blonde hair and endearing smile.

Whether its on the soccer field or anywhere else, Akkie is very active and a natural leader. She helps those who get picked on and make them believe in themselves. This puts her on the warpath against Joep the class bully who doesn’t believe girls should even be playing soccer.

The story takes on a more dramatic turn when they find out that Akkie has leukemia. Instead of becoming a very heavy drama, it takes on an inspiring twist, as she is able to combat the illness with her courage and love for life. Although the movie is centered on teenagers, audiences of all ages will enjoy and learn from this very inspiring movie.

Teenagers don’t stop being teenagers just because they have a terminal illness. She still falls in love. She still needs to play soccer and hang out with her friends. Instead of being a dark, sad film, it becomes a story of hope. The role of sports in the well being of kids and people in general is also an important theme. Soccer specifically becomes a kind of therapy for Akkie, who is the best player of her school.

One of the things that make the film realistic is the way that characters grow. There are no black and whites no good guys or bad guys. Akkie is at odds with Joep because of his bullying, later on she finds out why and how he is this way. Ibrahim (Amin Belyandouz) is the smallest and most adorable of the kids but is also seems to be the smartest and most resourceful. Elise (Fiona Livingston) is Akkie’s bff who has confidence issues especially in playing soccer. Laurens (Bram Flick) is the boy who has always had a huge crush on Akkie and expresses himself through caricature.

Ibrahim, a Muslim kid says they go to Allah. Joep turns away and says when you die, that’s it. They examine this question give their answers and are not judged by them. Just being able to express his or her different beliefs somehow is a source of comfort for everyone. Whether you’re 8 or 80, you’ll cry, laugh and learn so much from COOL KIDS DON’T CRY.
