Count Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson): Are you glad to see me alone? Anna Karenina (Keira Knightley): This must stop. You make me feel as if I was guilty of something. Vronsky: What do you want me to do? Anna: I want you to go to Moscow and beg Kitty to forgive you. Vronsky: No that’s not what you want. Moscow? You can do better than that. Tonight I refused a posting to Tashkent. I can change my mind and you’ll never see me again. Anna: If you have any thought for me you will give me back my peace. Vronsky: I have no peace to give. There is no peace for us, in misery our greatest happiness.

There have been many adaptations of Leo Tolstoy’s novel put to screen, radio, TV, stage and even opera. Vivien Leigh was cast in 1948. Jacqueline Bisset and the late Christopher Reeve were in a TV movie version in 1985. Sophie Marceau and Sean Bean were in the 1997 version. The story of love, lust, scandal and societal judgment has fascinated audiences for decades. This version by director Joe Wright may be the most visually stunning among all of them. Recreating the grandeur of 19th century Russia was perhaps one of the big challenges in making the film. It has been nominated for 4 Oscars: Original Score, Cinematography, Production Design and Costume. The British Academy Film awards (BAFTA) has already given ANNA KARENINA the Best Costume award (Jacqueline Durran) while nominating it in similar categories and Most Outstanding British film as well.

The other categories that should’ve been added by award giving bodies were Best Direction and Best Editing. Wright was able to eloquently visualize the sensation of being in love especially in the extravagant ball scene.

Anna (Keira Knightley) couldn’t take her eyes off Count Vronsky (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) but also did not want to be seen staring as she is already married to Karenin (Jude Law). She avoids his gaze turning away for a few seconds, when she looks back he’s gone. Suddenly she hears his voice behind her asking her to dance. The Waltz is hardly romantic with its formal movements, but the minimal physical contact and the person she was dancing with made it so thrilling. The hundreds of other pairs literally froze while Anna and the Count waltzed to the middle of the ballroom. Lights around them darkened and they were the only two people in the universe.

Wright masterfully used a theater stage as a metaphor for his character’s lives. All the world is a stage, in this sense shows that society will eventually know of or judge people in a particular scene.

Apart from Cinematography, Editing also enhanced the sets and detail that showed the decadence of Russian aristocracy. The camera would dolly into a scene with an elaborate golden wall divider in the background and cut where the background ends.  A servant would close a black door also with ornate golden relief ending a particular scene. Everything is so smooth and well thought out; sometimes you hardly notice the change in location or ‘transition’ until you’re already there.

ANNA KARENINA reveals much more than just the joy, pain and tragedies of love. While showing the decadence of the aristocracy it also deals with the disparity between classes and the prejudices that existed. There’s a personal evolution in the characters as the story goes along that people go through in real life.

The film illustrates how stratified and segregated Russian society was in the 19th century. It was a violation of decorum to have gypsies or any other race to stay in the same roof as an aristocrat. Kostya Levin’s (Domhnall Gleeson) brother Nikolai (David Wilmot) had kept an Indian woman, Masha (Tannishtha Chatterjee) as a companion who was taking care of him through his grave illness.

The young, blonde, princess-like Kitty (Alicia Vikander) went into Nikolai’s room to give him a sponge bath and saw the Indian companion. Kostya apologized to Kitty for having her there and insisted that she leave. Instead Kitty gave a towel to Masha and asked her to wash Nikolai together.

Kitty had always been in the bosom of wealth and decadence, that frame of mind. Because of her own loss and pain, it made her grow as a person and learn what was truly important in life. Kostya is himself a landowner who worked with farmers. He had found peace in a simpler life that made him ask, “Is it living simply that I’m looking for?”

Rousey has successfully defended her UFC Bantamweight Belt Against Liz Carmouche in a spectacular arm bar Feb 23, 2013. More than her strength and skill her mind and honesty make her a real woman in my book.

During a recent interview with EsNews she shared her experience during the 2008 Olympics. She also talked about swimmer Michael Phelps segregating himself from other Olympic athletes. She contrasted Phelps to Kobe Bryant whom she described as nicer, “Michael Phelps needed his own private section of the club to be, like, private for him. These NBA players over here are a bigger deal than this guy, and they’re all hanging out with us. Hello, we’re your teammates. We’re not a bunch of groupies. Come hang out with us. Who the hell are you?”

During the 2012 ESPY Awards Ronda criticized Kim Kardashian as a poor example for younger girls, “You know what, I would beat the crap out of Kim Kardashian actually. Any girl who is famous and idolized because she made a sex video with some guy and that’s all that you’re known for, ‘Oh, I got my fame for sucking [expletive],’ I think it’s pretty stupid, sorry, but it’s true.”

Liz Carmouche put up a fight, which meant it, lasted til the last minute of the first round. It was the longest any opponent had lasted with Ronda Rousey who retained her UFC Batnamweight belt last Feb 23, 2013.

Rousey summarized what media, TV networks and fans have been doing, “Why is everyone slipping it under the carpet now? She’s selling Sketchers to 13-year-olds,” Rousey added. “I don’t want some girl, whose entire fame is based on a sex video, to be selling Sketchers to my little sister. Girls like Kim Kardashian are being pushed in my little sister’s face, and it’s just not healthy. She shouldn’t need to have role models like this, and that’s why I’m doing stuff like ESPN Body because someone needs to do it.” Comments on the video have asked for an octagon fight between Rousey and Kim Kardashian’s partner Kanye West.

Rousey should be asked her thoughts on Floyd Mayweather Jr. getting convicted for battery domestic violence charge. ESPN.com reported, “The case stemmed from a hair-pulling, punching and arm-twisting argument with his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris while two of their children watched in September 2010.” It was Mayweather’s only conviction among many charges of domestic abuse from his past girl friends and other women with whom he’s fathered children.

I’m a huge boxing fan but MMA fighters are just far more versatile including kickboxing, wrestling, jiu jitsu and in Ronda’s case Olympic level Judo in their game. Realistically as decorated a boxer as he is Floyd Money Mayweather Jr. will just get torn apart by Ronda Rousey in the octagon. We’ve already seen the experiment where former Heavy Weight Champ James ‘Lights Out’ Toney got ground and pounded before UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture mercifully choked him out.

IMG_2479

I can imagine Ronda getting a take down on the former WBC Welterweight Champion Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather in less than a minute. His right elbow would be twisted so badly beyond recognition. And then go for the ground on pound on his face. Rousey is one woman Mayweather will never mess with.

There could not have been a more ROCKY Balboa-like scenario than the UFC 157 main event Ronda Rousey vs Liz Carmouche at the HONDA Center in Anaheim, California, Feb 23, 2013. ‘Rowdy’ Ronda Rousey has it all: the stunning looks, the fame, the money and most of all the historic / first women’s UFC Bantamweight belt. Ronda was more like Apollo Creed and Liz Carmouche the under dog Rocky. Carmouche is the tough former U.S. Marine who has had an exciting MMA career but is still relatively new to the sport.

Everyone, from fans to the media knew the chances of an upset were slim. No one outside the camp and the Lizbos, the official Liz Carmouche fan club would really believe that she could beat Rousey. Carmouche is also the first openly gay MMA fighter. No one could deny however, that Carmouche had courage and heart more than any other of Rousey’s opponents, who happens to be undefeated.

IMG_2860

And it’s not just the fact that Rousey is undefeated, but how she is able to literally dispose of all her opponents that make her so dominant. Typically, Rousey would throw a few punches get a takedown and lock her legs in on the neck and head and crank the most deadly and unstoppable arm bar in the sport. None of her opponents could stop it, all it takes is a few seconds and the other fighter would tap out. The longest her fight lasted was a minute on the way to becoming Strikeforce Champion, a league that was acquired by the UFC.

Within seconds when the 1st round starts Rousey uses a Judo throw to put Carmouche on her back.

Within seconds when the 1st round starts Rousey uses a Judo throw to put Carmouche on her back.

To Carmouche’s credit she turned out to be the toughest fight for Rousey. After getting up from a takedown she took Rousey’s back and was able to get a face crank. In the undercard that night California Kid Uriah Faber finished Ivan Menjivar in almost the same fashion with one distinction. Uriah was able to get his wrist under Menjivar’s chin to make it a rear naked choke, which ended the fight.

Carmouche had Rousey in trouble with a face crank. If she were able to put it under her chin it would be a rear naked choke. Uriah Faber was in the same position on Menjivar.

Carmouche was almost there with a face crank, but Rousey was able to bend down shake her off and throw her to the ground. On top Rousey softened her up with ground and pound. Then came the inevitable, as legs started locking in her head and neck. It looked as if she could escape until Rousey was able to roll with her and turn into an even more inescapable position and crank on the right arm. This is where the skill of referee Big John McCarthy was crucial.

The quickness and reaction of referee Big John McCarthy may have saved Liz Carmouche’s arm from permanent damage.

The quickness and reaction of referee Big John McCarthy may have saved Liz Carmouche’s arm from permanent damage.

Ref Big John McCarthy had to pull Carmouche’s arm immediately after the tap out. A second longer would risk breaking her arm permanently.

Ref Big John McCarthy had to pull Carmouche’s arm immediately after the tap out. A second longer would risk breaking her arm permanently.

The second Carmouche tapped out, he was there to yank Liz arm out of Ronda’s hold. A second more it would’ve been a broken arm. The highlights of Rousey’s fights show the elbow popping out of position and you can see when and where the arm breaks. Even if a fighter’s arm heals from that injury it will never be the same. Obviously, there was a conscious effort on John McCarthy to save Liz from being permanently injured.

Rousey raises her arms in victory.

Rousey raises her arms in victory.

It’s a huge achievement for Liz that the fight lasted up to the final minute of the first round. She even had Rousey in trouble more than anyone else had before. Rousey was able to show that she’s just too athletic and too technically proficient for anyone to realistically challenge her for the belt.

For the first time in UFC history, Pres. Dana White puts the UFC Women’s Bantanweight belt on Ronda Rousey.

For the first time in UFC history, Pres. Dana White puts the UFC Women’s Bantanweight belt on Ronda Rousey.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Just over a year ago, UFC President Dana White claimed there would never be a women’s fight in the UFC. I can understand where he’s coming from. I’m 100% sure that women could have exciting and entertaining fights just as much as men. I’ve been a boxing fan since childhood who has seen women’s boxing on TV. I just couldn’t stand seeing women get hurt, although I can’t really speak for the whole male population of the world. I suspect that just like me the majority of fans had similar reservations of seeing women compete in MMA.

Dana White once said that there would never be Women in the UFC card. That all changed with Ronda Rousey.

Dana White once said that there would never be Women in the UFC card. That all changed with Ronda Rousey.

Seeing someone like Ronda Rousey however is a huge game changer. When Dana came out with the announcement of her as a UFC champ, it made me want to ask what is she like in the octagon? She has that all American beauty, blonde hair, killer smile, bright blue eyes, Sports Illustrated swimsuit (sorry ESPN Body) issue-level figure. She’s also one of the best trash talkers too by the way.

After finding out her record and highlight of her wins, it was nothing short of spectacular. I can’t remember anyone being as dominant as her even compared with ANY male UFC champion. It reminded me of Mike Tyson’s peak in his career when he was knocking people out in the first three rounds. No doubt, she has the most deadly and perfectly executed arm bar technique, male OR female. It took someone like Ronda Rousey to change Dana’s mind and go for Women’s MMA and eventually the whole world.

Carmouche’s trainer Manolo Hernandez was still pumped after the fight (behind Liz). Before leaving the cage he screamed, “We’ll be back.”

Dana’s problem was finding someone who was crazy enough to fight her. Ronda herself said that the belt wasn’t real until she defended it. Carmouche had just come from 3 tours of duty in Iraq as a U.S. Marine when she got into MMA. She proved herself in her stints in Strikeforce before meeting Rousey in the UFC. The Lizbos ‘twitterbombed ‘Dana White begging for the fight with Rousey. After some research on Carmouche, White found a respectable challenger while no one else wanted to fight the dangerous Rousey.

Congratulations, you’re a true champion it’s an honor calling your first fight.”

Host Seth Macfarlane: “Its getting late in the show, we’ll just free associate some names of the two most physically opposite Oscar winners I could find and think of and see if they appear…Dustin Hoffman and Charlize Theron.”

Charlize: The origins of many great screenplays are often a mess.  They come from some inner light, inner darkness. Dustin Hoffman: Or a writer who just needs a job. Charlize: A good writer, the right writer can hear how a good story can come to life.

ARGO’s Chris Terrio won for Best Adapted Screenplay while Quentin Tarantino won for DJANGO UNCHAINED in the Best Original Screenplay category. ARGO went on to win the plum Best Picture along with Best Editing (William Goldenberg).

In his speech screenwriter Chris Terrio thanked Affleck who co-wrote GOODWILL HUNTING with Matt Damon, which also won an Oscar Best screenplay Award in 1998, “Thank you Ben Affleck. Ben 15 years ago you were up here with the first screenplay you got made and now you made this film that brought me up here. It’s a gift I can never repay it. Thank you, I love you.” Affleck was director for ARGO he also co-produced it with two other actors: George Clooney and Grant Heslov.

Terrio also credited former CIA Technical Operations Officer turned writer, “I wana dedicate this to Tony Mendez. 33 years ago using nothing but your creativity and intelligence got 6 people out of a very bad situation. So I wana dedicate this to him and the people around the world in the U.S. in Iran who use creativity and intelligence to solve problems nonviolently, thank you.”

Quentin Tarantino is the quintessential film geek. Having worked as a video rental staff his love for movies is well known, even without having a formal university degree in filmmaking. His best Original Screenplay award for DJANGO UNCHAINED is his 2nd Oscar. His first was also Best Original screenplay for PULP FICTION.

In his acceptance speech Tarantino gave credit to his cast, “That’s cool Charlize is my neighbor thank you Mr. Hoffman! I’ve been saying I want to thank the actors for what they’ve done when it comes to my script. It’s not just an easy thing to say. That’s really why I’m standing here. If people are gonna talk about my film its because of the characters that I create. And I only have one chance to get it right. I have to cast the right people to make those characters come alive and hopefully live for a long time. Boy this time did I do it. Thank you so much guys.”

DJANGO UNCHAINED also earned Best Supporting Actor award for Christoph Waltz (Dr. King Schultz). The cast includes Jamie Foxx as Django, Leonardo Di Caprio, Kerry Washington, Samuel Jackson, Don Johnson and Franco Nero among others.

Immediately before the JAWS theme signaling the end of the allotted time he added, “I’m getting off but I have to say it’s an honor to get it this year in both the original and the adapted screenplay the writing is just fantastic. This will be the writer’s year man! The competition has all been wonderful, peace out!”

In the post awards press conference Tarantino was able to explain that his reason for writing DJANGO UNCHAINED was to encourage an active discussion on that period of American history, “To actually take an audience member from the 21st century and stick them into the antebellum south and see a sense of what America was like back then. Even the people who have criticized the movie and some of them who don’t like it I can understand that. A lot of people DO like it. And they’ve been going back and forth. That back and forth is really what I wanted at the end of the day for this movie. And I hope that even continues for the next few years.”

Tarantino was also asked, “do you think the financial success of these films can impact studios so they can think about adult oriented serious minded fare?”According to him this has happened before, “That’s a very good question and I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately. I go into my own little film study from time to time and it takes crazy moments like this to put it out of my brain. I’ve been doing a lot of film study in the late 60’s early 70s in particular 69, 70 and 71.”

Quentin Tarantino won for DJANGO UNCHAINED in the Best Original Screenplay category. He also saw similarities between the current BEST PICTURE nominees and the 1967 Oscar nominees, which started the NEW HOLLYWOOD era.

Quentin Tarantino won for DJANGO UNCHAINED in the Best Original Screenplay category. He also saw similarities between the current BEST PICTURE nominees and the 1967 Oscar nominees, which started the NEW HOLLYWOOD era.

The late 1960’s was the beginning of an era, “Starting ‘67 that was the beginning of what they call New Hollywood. I wasn’t thinking about us. I was just doing that study for my own edification. I looked at the 9 nominees and I have to say more than most other times I actually recognized the spirit that was going on then with the 9 nominees now even backed by some commercial success in some of them. They were making adult films with subject matter that would suggest that any of these would be commercial or be popular.”

Musicals were popular immediately before the 1970s,  an example is 1969’s Best Picture Awardee OLIVER in 2013 LES MISERABLE another musical wins Best Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway) and Best Make Up and Hair Styling (Lisa Westcott and Julie Dartnell).

Dr. Stephen Rust defines: “New Hollywood” or “The Hollywood Renaissance” refers to a unique period of U.S. studio filmmaking driven largely by up-and-coming writer/directors. These young filmmakers, influenced by the American social upheavals of the 1960s and the cinematic innovations of European filmmakers, brought explicit sex, drugs, rock and roll, and a countercultural ethos to the American cinema in the late 1960s and throughout the decade of the 1970s. According to film journalist Peter Biskind, the New Hollywood period was “the last time Hollywood produced a body of risky, high-quality work . . . that defied traditional narrative conventions, that challenged the tyranny of technical correctness, that broke the taboos of language and behavior, that dared to end unhappily.”

Some of the directors identified with New Hollywood include Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley Kubrick, Woody Allen, Robert Altman, George Lucas, Hal Ashby, Carroll Ballard, Robert Benton, Peter Bogdanovich, John Boorman, Michael Cimino, Brian De Palma, Miloš Forman and Bob Fosse.

While it still may be too early to compare the likes of Quentin Tarantino, Ang Lee (Best Director- Life of Pi), Ben Affleck (Best Picture-ARGO) and Kathryn Bigelow (Best Picture-HURT LOCKER) to the aforementioned names they are certainly well on their way. Steven Spielberg of LINCOLN has certainly earned that right.

During the Press con Muñoz revealed that his parents are from Bicol who settled in Sta. Ana Manila. Later on they were able to move to San Diego, California. Muñoz had a stellar collegiate wrestling career before becoming a UFC fighter. And has actually trained current middleweight champ Anderson Silva to improve takedowns and wrestling skills in general. Mark is also scheduled to train top homegrown MMA fighter Eduard Folayong for one month this coming May in his gym REIGN TRAINING Center in Lake Forest, California.

He has visited several MMA gyms in Manila while meeting his relatives again. The last time he was here he saw 60 relatives and ate a lot of food in a restaurant. Filipino food according to him is one of the best reasons to come home. Watch out for more pics and articles on the Filipino Wrecking Machine.  During the press con I was also able to make new friends in Raymond Varilla, Jasmine Cuizon of projectlifestyle.com and Mars Callo Pinoyfitness.com. Even though he lost his most recent fight against Chris Weidman, thousands flocked to the Mall of Asia Music Hall last March 10 to get a glimpse of Mark Muñoz. ‘The Filipino Wrecking Machine’ has become the Philippines’ most visible face in MMA’s biggest show in the UFC. Brandon ‘The Truth’ Vera at Light Heavyweight has also proudly represented us in the octagon and has also been here.

Muñoz in the middleweight division is more vocal about his Pinoy roots. He proudly exclaims “I am 100% Filipino!” over and over again. And has taken the time to learn more Tagalog words and promises to speak more fluently when he returns after his Tim Boetsch fight on UFC 162 slated for July 6 (aired here July 7, 2013 on BALLS channel).

Mark’s influence isn’t measured by his win loss record but more of how he is outside octagon. His dedication to his family and initiatives to help not just in his local community in the U.S. but also here in the Philippines via typhoon PABLO victims have garnered him even more fans.

He was born in Japan from Filipino parents; his father was a part of the U.S. Navy who later moved his family to Vallejo California. During a press con he was able to talk about his roots here, “My father originally, well his father is from Bicol.  They moved to Pasay City that’s where he grew up. My mom is from Sta. Ana.  Manila. I have a family party scheduled for tomorrow. Can’t wait to meet all my family members. Last year I met them all about 60 of them in one restaurant. We ate nearly all of the food. I’m very excited to meet all my family and all the fans here as well. I love the Philippines and I plan to come back more.”

Being typically Filipino he also brought all his relatives to the meet and greet event last March 10. Of course they had a picture taking session, which was the biggest group/ family photo with all 60 of them. Almost like Willie Revillame in WOWOWILLIE he involved his kamaganak (relatives) by having them do the ‘Harlem Shake’ on the ring.

When asked what his favorite food was Mark recited a litany of Pinoy dishes that made the press laugh, “Adobo, kare-kare, pansit, dinuguan, monggo, tinola, sinigang, nilaga, lumpia, chihcaron, lechon kawali, ginisa, tapa, I can keep on going. I love the food I love the people. The people here are amazing. The hospitality the generosity the love, the care, the genuine concern is how I grew up. I grew 100% Filipino my mom cooked for me since the day I got out of her womb. She’s been cooking for me. When she comes to my house she cooks food. There are 6 people in my family she cooks for 50! Then if you don’t eat it she gets mad. ‘You eat you eat!’ I grew up very Filipino.”

Not far from his mind were the thousands of Filipinos who lost their homes and livelihood during typhoon PABLO, “I actually love the fighting spirit here in the Phil. I really do. When the flood came I saw the fighting spirit come out of the people. I was supposed to come during that time. We did flood relief and fundraiser. We saw a lot of people fighting, just being resilient people and being very tough, persevering. Those are all the things that Filipino people are. I want to represent that inside the octagon in the UFC.”

It is Mark’s reputation of giving back to the community that distinguishes him from other UFC fighters. As an awarded wrestler throughout his high school and college career, he is acknowledged as one of the best coaches for wrestling in MMA. UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva, the Nogueira brothers, Lyoto Machida have all trained with Muñoz to improve their wrestling.

The REIGN TRAINING CENTER, which he owns and operates, boasts a stable of strong UFC fighters like Kryztof Sozynski and Invicta Atomweight champion Jessica Penne.  The gym is named because “Reign: \’ran\ A period of time during which one achieves power or dominance through their desire, direction, discipline, diligence, and dedication. (5 D’s)”

According to Wikipedia, “Muñoz continues to give back to the wrestling community by offering a 5 to 10 day wrestling camp for high school athletes in Oceanside, California. He brings in wrestlers from Cal Poly, Fullerton, and Oregon to help the kids. Also Muñoz brings in Coach Calivitta and many other great clinicians like Urijah Faber, Joe Heskett, and even the wrestling great and his coach John Smith.”

One of the best homegrown MMA fighters have already touched base with Mark to help him train and maybe try his luck in the UFC, “Whoever wants to come and train, I’ll try to help them as much as I can while I’m here. There are fighters who are gonna come and see me too in my gym back in the States. Eduard Folayang is coming to train with me and I’m looking forward to that. He’s a really nice guy and wants to improve in his wrestling. I’ve accepted the challenge to help him 100%. He’s gona come for 2 months. I’m excited to meet anybody out here who wants to learn.”

Although his kids are active he doesn’t force them into MMA, “My whole family is involved in sports. My daughter does soccer I want her to do volleyball. I’ve been coaxing her to do that but she’s very highly involved in soccer. My son does soccer, baseball and I coach him in wrestling. If they ever wanted to do MMA I ‘d back them 100%. Anything they wanted to do I’d back them 100% and they have a great coach.

His elder sister Rheena who handles his PR was an influence on him too, “I played a lot of sports when I was younger, basketball, football. If I didn’t get hurt I’d probably be in American football. I played volleyball in tournaments with my church. I played in tournaments after that. My sister taught me volleyball so I like volleyball a lot too. I got into mixed martial arts through wrestling. That’s what I fell in love with so I’m here to stay.”

UFC Asia EVP and Managing Dir Mark Fischer has seen the popularity of MMA in the Philippines. He made an important announcement in the press con together with Mark, “I’d like to predict that we’d do a fight in Manila maybe somewhere else in the Philippines but most likely Manila in 2014. And this guy is gonna be in the main card! So stay tuned for more details.”

Fischer qualified his statement and asked all Filipinos for help, “Its just a prediction I need all of your support and those of our corporate sponsors and the fans to make it all a reality. But if we all work together we’re gonna make this happen. We all need to work together to make it a reality.” We all owe it to Mark Muñoz to buy tickets and tell our friends about it. His countrymen for him are all part of a bigger family, for him WE ARE ALL his kamaganak.

Red light shines on gyrating bodies on stage. Isay Alvarez as Nimia in HIMALA seems to recall a similar scene in Miss Saigon in London also scantily clad worker in a bar. Although here in HIMALA Nimia is promoted to Mama san. Isay Alvarez will next be in the lead role of KATY which will run at the MERALCO theater by May.

HIMALA the Musical is by TOUCHWORKX with May Bayot in the lead role of Elsa. You can catch the musical’s 10th Anniversary run at PETA from March 15-March 24, 2013. Cynthia Culig-Guico, Dulce, Mia Reonal Bolaños, Kalila Aguilos, Bong Cabrera and Angeli Bayani are some of the other notable names in the production. Vincent De Jesus had the functions of composer and musical director and co wrote the songs with Ricky Lee.

Added to the original main cast are Viva Voce and the University of Santo Tomas Singers Alumni. Director Soxie Topacio said the expanded chorus was something that previous versions of the musical did not have. The first song “ Ang Eclipse at Ang Aparisyon” had a haunting effect when sung by Viva Voce and the UST Singer’s Alumni. They also added to the crowds and multitudes on stage, which the Film version was known for.

Legendary screenwriter Ricky Lee wrote the now classic film by Ishmael Bernal starring Nora Aunor. He spoke about the effect that the film and story itself has had , “Unang una HIMALA has lived for 30 years already and mukhang mabubuhay pa siya ng matagal. Whether you like it or not part na nung culture natin yung HIMALA e. Part na ng culture natin si Elsa. Part ng buhay natin yung topic ng play whether it’s a film or a stage production.”

He was all praises for this latest version of the musical by Director Soxie Topacio and Vincent de Jesus, “Its not really a full production it’s a concert so mas mabilis siya. Yung transitions mas smooth. The performance was really powerful. Sina Dulce sina May, si Isay very heartfelt yung performances nila.”

Lee however stated that the musical has advantages over the film, “Each production na ririnig  mo yung iringan nila, yung paghinga nila because its live. Na ririnig mo yung daing nila, na aamoy mo yung pawis nila, na kikita mo yung tears nila buhay na buhay sa harap mo. Unlike sa film, eto totoo. In away it’s more real.”

Lee relishes the unpredictability in theater, “The other thing is pag pinanuood mo siya, you know what’s going to happen at the same time you don’t know what’s going to happen. These are live performances anything can happen. Pwedeng iba ngayon si May Bayot, medyo iba bukas medyo iba sa susunod. Sakin it’s a very exciting thing.  No two performances are the same and thank God there’s multiplicity ng performances. Thank God you have Nora Aunor! Thank God you have May Bayot and thank God there will be other people who will perform that role in their own way na equally splendid. So masarap for a writer and HIMALA na bubuhay pa ulit ulit si Elsa sa iba ibang pagkatao. Sakin that’s more than enough kabayaran sa lahat ng hirap sa pag create ng material.”

The musical was also able to compensate for the loss of the multitudes on screen, “Parang opera sa akin it works. One good thing in the stage production, which I thought, would be difficult, sa pelikula isang malaking character yung masses e. The crowd all throughout it kept growing. Dito meron din siya. You can feel all the stages nung buhay ng community na nagsusuffer from belief to disbelief to disillusion and so yon nan dun din.”

May Bayot as Elsa has always performed up to the task of the role that made Nora Aunor a critically acclaimed actress. Lee goes on, “She’s very good. She was good then when it first came out. She’s still very good now. You can feel the pain. Painful in a positive sense, painful performance yung rendition niya. And ang complex complex ng HIMALA niya. You can feel all the facets ng emotion niya, pagkatao niya the doubts, the insecurities, the desire to be immortal, the vanity. At the same time the fragility na mimix niya lahat yon. And the voice, the voice is very pure.”

Nora Aunor (seen here in the film version) was more ‘pure and transcendental’ compared to May Bayot who was ‘complex, with all facets of emotion’ according to legendary screenwriter Ricky Lee.

Nora Aunor (seen here in the film version) was more ‘pure and transcendental’ compared to May Bayot who was ‘complex, with all facets of emotion’ according to legendary screenwriter Ricky Lee.

When asked to compare May Bayot with Nora Aunor, Lee said it would be very unfair for both. Being in two different mediums its difficult to compare especially since the film was not a musical. “Describing each, Nora was very pure and transcendental. The purity is there, the movements the face, every bit of her being nandun. Ang pure niya she’s one whole mystic being. On the other hand si May, without comparing or putting either one down, she’s complex. She’s left and right, black and white, rough and polished. I don’t want to compare because the film was asking for something else than the stage production.

The style and presence of both actors were different, “Si May is a leading being in the production. Si Nora was leading in a pure way, which is also good. That’s what the film set out to do. The set was very minimalist. Yon ang philsophical inclination ng film so tama lang doon e. Iba naman ang pinupuntahan so I don’t want to compare. And I hope that you don’t compare the two to be fair to both. As a writer pareho silang nagbigay ng flesh at kaluluwa dun sa pagkatao ni Elsa.”  Sponsors include: PLDT, UCPB, THEATER ACTOR’S GUILD Philippines, ARMY NAVY Burger + Burrito, LUBE.ph, Business World, High Life, HerWord.com

Singer and acclaimed theater actress May Bayot currently plays Elsa in HIMALA by TOUCHWORKX productions. Catch the musical version of the Nora Aunor film classic’s 10th Anniversary run at PETA from March 15-March 24, 2013.

According to Direk Soxie Topacio, Nora Aunor herself after seeing the original run in 2003, said the songs written were ‘not for her’. Ate Guy’s voice is more honed for pop. The musical vocals, for lack of a better term, are operatic. Composer and Musical Director Vincent De Jesus intentionally did not want the music to be boxed into the usual pattern of a musical. De Jesus co wrote HIMALA also with legendary screenwriter Ricky Lee.

Nora Aunor herself admitted, the songs were not written for her, whose voice is more for pop music.

The role for Elsa in the musical necessitated the vocal prowess of May Bayot. Other roles are equally renowned vocally: Dulce (Aling Saling), Isay Alvarez (Nimia) and Cynthia Culig-Guico (Chayong). Isay Alvarez also stars in the upcoming KATY with Dulce, Epy Quizon and Gian Magdangal at the MERALCO Theater this month of May. May Bayot will also star in Tanghalang Pilipino’s production of STAGESHOW, the last masterpiece of playwright/actor/director Mario O’Hara this August.

May Bayot comes from an illustrious musical family. Her parents: Benjamin Bayot (operatic tenor), Esperanza Dimalanta (coloratura soprano) taught all their children to sing. Sister Lani Misalucha is now one of the more popular singers in Las Vegas, Karlyn is a TV actress while brothers Novi and Osi play the guitar and piano respectively.

In an interview May was able to talk about how she started out professionally, also with HIMALA musical director Vincent de Jesus, “I started 1990 I stopped 1994. For her she is living proof that miracles do happen, “If you want to find miracles you can see it everyday. May ginagawa ang Diyos na miracle every day. Yung buhay ko lang everyday is already a miracle. Ako, prognosis sakin I will not be able to walk properly. Di nako makaka function. After 3 months naka sampa uli ako sa banda ko. Naka gawa ako ng play so its paniniwala and you have to couple it with hard work. God makes miracles everyday. At the same time you are a partner with him making your own miracle.”

HIMALA the musical for May is one of many Filipino produced works that we as audiences should make sure to watch and support, “Gusto kong makita ng mga tao na magagaling tayong Pinoy na gumawa ng mga ganito. Di tayo kelangan pumunta sa Hong Kong para manood ng ‘Lion King’ o kung ano. Of course totally dfferent kind of entertainment but bago yon tayo muna. Kung di tayo tayo magtutulungan pano naman tayo ma appreciate ng ibang tao?”

For My Delicate Rose,

Written by

Jude Bautista

Years after humanity stopped polluting the world, the skies have cleared up. Ian O’Shea (Jake Abel) takes Wanda (Saoirse Ronan) outside the caverns. She didn’t realize they were up on the canyons high above the deserts below. From here the night sky is clear, an infinite number of stars shine. Ian finally tells Wanda he loves her. Wanda replies, “I love you too Ian.”  He feels the reluctance in her voice, “You have two minds about it?” Wanda talks about the other being inside her, “She’s in love with Jared. This body loves him.”

THE HOST is based on the work of Stephenie Meyers, which is a departure from the usual ‘Twilight’ series, which she is famous for. It may open her fan base even more from just teen audiences to science fiction fans. Writer director Andrew Niccol adapted the novel for the screen along with Meyers. Niccol wrote the screenplay for THE TRUMAN SHOW with Jim Carrey and GATTACA with Ethan Hawke.

Niccol’s films have always dealt with the individual’s relationship or conflict with society. There are a lot of insights with his work. For example how modern society is obsessed with celebrity and media, how a show is able to purchase the rights of filming the entire life of a person, TRUMAN SHOW. GATTACA deals with the complexities and moral questions of genetics and (un) natural selection.

THE HOST in this case was a great material for Niccol to work with, in spite of the teenybopper, adolescent, romance fluff that TWILIGHT series was known for. Meyers wrote a very compelling and interesting novel in the sci-fi tradition at the same time, she is able to write a moving love story.

Central to the film is casting the lead character in Melanie/Wanda. This is where Soairse Ronan comes in and takes over with her exceptional uncharacteristic acting abilities for someone so young. Her name is pronounced sir-sha like the word inertia. Soairse means freedom in Irish. Her look has a mysterious and ethereal quality perfect for the role.  She has that small thin lips and narrow, graceful jaw line that emphasizes femininity and innocence. Yet her expressive eyes give her a very soulful quality. In the Philippines she has similar features with international artist Michelle Pauline Lim. Ronan’s features attracted LOTR director Peter Jackson to cast her in LOVELY BONES another film based on a novel, this time by Alice Sebold.

Both THE HOST and LOVELY BONES deal with human consciousness and the soul but are vastly different movies. Soairse very ably lent a convincing performance in both films. Although she was the lead character in LOVELY BONES, Rachel Weisz and Mark Wahlberg got the top billing. THE HOST shows her skills as the true lead.

THE HOST is similar in concept with INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS a true science fiction classic that has had film versions since the 1956, 1978, 1993 and as late as 2007 (The Invasion). This is where aliens take over earth by creating clones and passing themselves off as humans. The key difference here is that the aliens invade the human body and take over the minds with glowing pupils as indication of the presence.  Also the aliens here are supposed to have an almost benign purpose of improving the planet or repairing the destruction that humans have wrought the earth.

Humans can’t live without violence in THE HOST- photo from official facebook site: http://www.facebook.com/thehostmovie?fref=ts

The ‘war’ here between humans and aliens is not as black and white as it is in other sci-fi films. Melanie is the human character that an alien called ‘Wanderer’ occupies. Since Melanie is this strong willed person her consciousness is able to stay in her body in spite of Wanderer occupying it. At times Melanie is able to wrest control of her physical body. This is where Soairse’s complex acting is very much in use, two minds in one body.

William Hurt is Jeb the inventor and leader of the human resistance in THE HOST- photo from official facebook site: http://www.facebook.com/thehostmovie?fref=ts

Casting William Hurt as an inventor and leader of human resistance Jeb was also important. Hurt has a wide experience in the sci-fi genre: ALTERED STATES, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, LOST IN SPACE etc. Jeb asked the most important questions to Wanderer which he changed to Wanda for short. He couldn’t resist asking the fundamental questions that we’ve had with intelligent life in the universe. It was the only real chance for humans to interact with the aliens without having their consciousness removed and invaded by an alien being.

How many planets are out there that sustain life? Why did they invade the earth? As far as they know there are only 12 planets that sustain life in the known universe. And they ‘invade’ planets to help and sustain life especially when humans have destroyed the environment and can’t exist without violence and inequality. The aliens basically cleaned the planet up, ended hunger, crime and war. As a rule the aliens known as souls, do not lie, mistrust or harm each other.

It is in this context that Wanda has a love triangle. Melanie truly was in love with Jared (Max Irons) who looks like a young Freddie Prinze Jr. until the aliens got to her. Now as Wanda she falls for Ian (Jake Abel). International supermodel turned actress Diane Kruger plays The Seeker. Screenwriter/Director Andrew Niccol was able to condense a 600 page novel into a very entertaining, exciting and moving film which helps us think about the most important questions. Can a person love someone separate from his or her body? How can you love an intelligent being not of your species? Will we get our acts together and repair what we’ve done on this one planet we live in?

Morena or olive skinned exquisiteness stood out in this year’s Reyna ng ALIWAN pageant that opened April 11, 2013. Everyone can still catch the Reyna or Queen of each festival and see the best celebrations or fiestas from around the country by watching ALIWAN FIESTA 2013.

April 12 is a continuation of pageant competition at Sotto Street and CCP Complex. While April 13 Saturday is the grand coronation night at the Aliw Theater. The grand Parade will also happen in the afternoon, this is where the drummers and dancers show their street dancing skills with their Reyna candidate aloft elaborate floats.

Candidates may have been inspired by the success of Binibinig Pilipinas 2010 winner Venus Raj who is herself a Morena Beauty. #17 Emily Vicotria Oke of Ilo ilo City (Dinagyang Festival) , #16 Halimatu Yushawu of Bacong Negros Oriental (Bacon Festival), and #11 Fe Mavella Cadungong Tano of Dumaguete City (Sandurot Festival) stood out not just because of their magnetic facial features but also because of their ability to project. Cebu’s #5 Jamie Herrel (Sinulog Festival), also captured the imagination of the crowd by incorporating  the Sinulog’s spinning movements during her walk.

One thing that makes this pageant unique is the strong emphasis on their hometown and festivals. The candidates truly represent the dance, costumes and traditions of their birthplace. There’s also no denying the fact that their physical beauty is at par with the most prestigious beauty pageant such as the Binibining Pilipinas which will have its coronation night this coming April 14 at the SMART ARANETA COLISEUM.

The list of participating festivals is by no means complete; there are quite a few more that have not participated. But a relatively high number among them are from the southern part of the Philippines. Which in my opinion is very good because the Mindanao region is not as promoted as much as the tourist spots in Luzon and Visayas. Iloilo has several fests that participated. General Santos has two and Maguindanao also has several representatives as well as Zamboanga and Cotabato which are all from the Mindanao area.

BAD ROMANCE 2nd Unit Director Sigfried Barros Sanchez stole the limelight from Mercedes Cabral only for just a moment during the premiere of their film last April 8, 2013. Sig was called on stage by LOVE Radio’s Atty Rico Pañero together with wife Racquel. They didn’t know it was for a kissing game which the couple pulled off.

I remember Sig posting on facebook an old ‘love letter’ his wife wrote after he was 3 hours late for their first date. Sig was proud of the anger of that letter from years back. Looks like they’ve patched things up since then.

Even at a young age he was influenced by the late Mario O’Hara as an actor, “Pinaka na tatandaan kong play niya sa PETA ay FAUST. Ang galing nya doon as an actor. Meron akong one act play, title DIRECTOR’S CUT. Siya yung peg ko for that role at di na matutuloy. This is a sexy one act play tungkol sa porn director.nung sinusulat ko siya yung na iisip ko. Alam mo yung character niya on stage? Sayang. Siguro may ibang pwedeng gumanap.”

Mario O’Hara is now nominated for the National Artist award as a multimedia artist whose career spans as actor, writer and director in radio, TV, theater and film. Del Carmen is one of many who believe he deserves award, “Ang dami diyan na dapat naging National Artist na e kahit na bubuhay pa sila e. I don’t know mahirap magsalita pero meron din na giging National Artist na dapat may na una pang mas deserving. Para sakin kung ano yung na giging National Artist kung ano yung na kikita ng tao bilang National Artist and not the award per se, not the title. Kung ano yung influence nila yon yon e hindi yung title.”

Thank you for writing, My Beloved. All our thoughts and prayers go to the people of Boston and those affected by the tragedy.

http://sports.inquirer.net/96329/boston-tragedy-hurts-unique-bond-of-running-community

From the first hand account of marathoner Leica Carpo of PDI: This is a tragedy that hurts not only city marathons, like Boston, New York and London, but the running community at large. There is a unique bond that forms during marathons not just with fellow runners but with the spectators and bystanders. From the high of hearing strangers cheer for you, to the sticky high fives from 6-year-olds and the promised kisses of Wellesley girls. It’s a moment that lasts a lifetime and keeps a tradition going stronger than ever even after 117 years.

The 117th Boston Marathon was not a day to be fast but lucky.

When we lined up to ride the buses to the Hopkington starting line at 6:30 a.m. that morning we had no idea what was in store for us later that afternoon.

On the same front page of PDI today April 17, 2013, photographer EDWIN BACASMAS captured a very telling facial reaction from Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah during his 2-day visit with P Noy. Who else but the presidential sister Kris Aquino was walking by in a ravishing red dress appearing non-chalant.

The Sultan’s head turned to the eye-catching woman in red. One of the early film roles by Kris Aquino is with the late Rene Requiestas in PIDO DIDA: Sabay Tayo which also had a sequel, PIDO DIDA 2: Kasal Na in 1990 and 91.  Rene became famous in the film franchise STARZAN with lead Joey De Leon. Rene’s famous character Chita-eh’s line from that series is: “Ganda Babaeeeh!” or beautiful woman in our language. The facial expression on the Sultan seems to echo that line. It doesn’t hurt too that the late comedian also had a goatee similar to his.

The question in my mind was what was Kris doing there in the first place? The caption also announces Kris as the no.1 Taxpayer in the land, just like the headline the day before. She may be brushing up on politics and how to run a government for her own turn as president… Ganda Babaeeh!

Understandably in any film award giving body screenwriters and other technical people are almost always second-class citizens compared to the actors and actresses, the goddesses who inhabit the silver screen. Even less recognition is given to entertainment writers who continually promote and try to make sense of what goes on and off screen.

The 61st FAMAS (Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences) is probably the last body anyone would expect to recognize writers which is known for honoring the commercial or mainstream films in the Philippines.

Two entertainment writers/ journalist / TV hosts were honored April 21, 2013 at the AFP Theater along with all the glitz and glamour of the stars. Butch Francisco of STAR TALK TX on GMA network was given the Dr. Jose Perez Memorial Award and Cristy Fermin of ANG LATEST on TV5 was given the Arturo M. Padua Memorial Award. Fermin however, was not able to attend the ceremony.

Butch Francisco was holding back the tears during his speech, “I’ve always been saying na sa lahat ng mga award giving bodies pinaka maganda ang tropeo ng FAMAS.  More than the physical attributes what I really appreciate about this award is the honor attached to it. You see I’ve been on television 18 years. On print 500 years. This is the first time I’m being acknowledged for whatever little contribution I’ve given to the entertainment profession. I’m sorry for being emotional but this is the first time.”

Butch mentioned all of his mentors and networks who discovered him, especially on his TV career, “I never had the chance to meet Dr. Perez but I’d like to thank his family led by Mrs. Maceda here. I’d like to thank the Philippine Star, Ricky Lo for the long period I wrote for them. Thank you also to ABS CBN for discovering me, to my GMA 7 STAR TALK family for nurturing me. Malou Fulgar my manager and adviser I see Ethel Ramos here and the other press people. You were a part of my life and my career. Tess Celestino, Arnel Natividad, Maribeth Bichara for the early years. I love you all, of course to the FAMAS for providing this wonderful recognition, of course to the creator and savior for this wonderful blessing thank you for the very, very long career capped by this very good blessing.”

Butch Francisco is also a member of Manunuri Ng Pelikulang Pilipino a very well esteemed circle of film critics and academicians which gives out the yearly GAWAD URIAN awards. An indication of the prestige of the award he received is the presenter.

Marichu was also producer of BATCH 81 of which she had monumental conflict with director Mike De Leon. In spite of her conflict she was driven to help finish the film, which was also exhibited at the CANNES film fest along with KISAPMATA in 1982.

This year, the Philippines is represented by 3 films in CANNES: NORTE, HANGGANAN NG KASAYSAYAN (NORTE, THE END OF HISTORY) by Lav Diaz, DEATH MARCH by Adolfo Alix Jr. and the short film ENGKANTONG LAOG SA MAHABANG DAPITHAPON (The Nomadic Creatures of a Long Twilight) by Derick Cabrido.
