Paul Mescal (Lucius): Brother. Let’s not kill each other for their amusement.

Vaeject responds by slashing at Lucius who quickly evades. Not wanting to kill him, Lucius hits the Goth with the blade’s handle. But only angers the Goth. Who manages to grab Lucius, carry him above his shoulders and body slams him to the floor. Vaeject grabs a sword and tries to stab Lucius, who rolls to safety and cuts the Vaeject instead, killing him instantly.

A Vision for Today

Forgive me for doing this again, something I did with the WICKED review. Analogizing it with what’s going on today. There is currently a war of ideas. On one side the idea of ‘America as the shining city on a hill’. On another side: might is right. Represented by Denzel’s character Macrinus. You can also argue, the twin Emperors in Geta and Caracalla, brilliantly played by Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger. Incidentally Hechinger also in an upcoming blockbuster KRAVEN THE HUNTER as Dmitri Smerdyakov aka Cameleon. Russell Crowe plays the father of Kraven in the movie Nikolai Kravinoff.

Macrinus and the twin Emperors are against the idea of Rome set by Marcus Aurelius in GLADIATOR 1. Played by the late Richard Harris, he wasn’t able to expound on it then. But is explained here by Lucius, “I grew up hearing stories at my grandfather’s knee. He used to talk about the dream that was Rome. It was so fragile, ‘you could only whisper it… or it would vanish’. He often would say ‘Strength and Honor . A Rome where all would live by fair law. A protection for all… A Rome of hope.”

I am grateful to all of them because, watching it on screen reminds us of the ideals that we aspire for all nations and peoples. Rome was far from perfect as you will see. Depicted as being morally corrupt and brutal, not unlike America. Goals like racial and gender equality, a more just society are necessary to help us develop. Some might argue for our own survival as well. The movie is an eloquent reminder to aspire for the best of us as individuals and as nations.

Forgiveness

As brutal as the scenes are, forgiveness is an overarching theme. The world isn’t created black and white. Sometimes we’re not aware of how and why people commit what we perceive to be ‘sins’. To this end Paul Mescal seems to be a better dramatic actor. Russell Crowe on the other hand looks tougher and more manly with his large frame and persona. Mescal created a more complex character in Lucius than Crowe’s Maximus.

Stellar Cast

Denzel Washington is able to inhabit characters and make them real. Macrinus isn’t a villain in the traditional sense. He’s closer to Little Finger in Game of Thrones, more of a plotter and opportunist than an evil mind. Ridley Scott needed someone with Denzel’s skills and charisma to also make him sympathetic. Not quite as villainous as Alonzo Harris in TRAINING DAY.

Doctore to Dafydd

One of the measures of GLADIATOR’s greatness and influence are the similar projects afterward that were spawned. One of them is the TV series SPARTACUS (2010). Perhaps the most consistent role there is Doctore played by Peter Mensa, apart from Crixus. Mensa is also cast here in GLADIATOR II. Fans of both will be happy to see him here. Mensa’s role of Jugurtha is different from SPARTACUS, more as an ally to Lucius.

Attention grabbing is a trimmed down Matt Lucas as Master of Ceremonies. Almost unrecognizable except for his smart ass delivery of presenting combatants. You get a touch of the many wacky characters he played in LITTLE BRITAIN (in BBC) and COME FLY WITH ME. Striking Looks

Even the discovery of Jewish actress Yuval Gonen as Lucius’ wife Arisha, was a fantastic choice. This is her first Hollywood film having starred in two Israeli TV series THE MISSING and THE STATION. She has an exotic beauty, there’s a middle eastern feel to her magnetic features. You know instantly she’s from that place. Not unlike Giannina Facio (Maximus wife) who has very strong and distinct Italian features, naturally curly hair and tan skin.
