November 22, 2024 – SM AURA Director’s Club Cinemas; No less than SM EVP for Marketing Joaquin Agustin said, “We are pleased to make this year’s festival more widely accessible to more audiences by making screenings absolutely free. At SM Aura until November 26; At SM North EDSA starting today until November 29. I would like to thank the Ambassador and the French Embassy for partnering with us for this remarkable initiative.” His speech was given during the opening of the 27th Edition of the French Film Festival.

Agustin clarified that SM as an organization, was supportive of the French Embassy’s Feminist advocacy. He said, “This year’s edition is especially significant as it highlights feminist cinema for the very first time. At SM we are committed to building a future where every woman feels safe, valued and empowered.”

Those are not empty words as he has the numbers to back up that commitment, “60% of our employees are women. Over 60% of our leadership team is comprised of women as well. Godmother Sigrid Bernardo
Emphasizing the goal of French Filipino collaboration, Filipina filmmaker Sigrid Bernardo was chosen as the Godmother of the fest. Her works BABAE (2005) and MAYA AND NILA (2024) were screened as part of the opening of the fest. Bernardo is multi-awarded, recognized for highlighting women’s issues in her work.

Among them ANG HULING CHACHA NI ANITA (2013) selected PRODUIRE AU SUD in Nantes and won Best Picture, Best Actress (Teri Malvar), Best Supporting Actress (Angel Aquino) in the CINEFILIPINO FILM FESTIVAL. Bernardo’s KITA KITA (2017) shot her to fame and was exhibited in AICHI Women’s International Film Festival.

Equality as Core Priority
Amb. Fontanel continued, “Equality between men and women is a core priority of France. Feminist diplomacy brings this commitment to the global stage. Protecting critical areas such as women’s rights, reducing gender inequality, increasing gender participation in decision making processes, peace and security in cultural and economic development.

There are many ways the French Embassy advocates for women, “Our embassy here also make women’s and girls’ rights an issue in political dialogue. With our partners and other governments. With this festival we build a bridge between feminism and culture. And make a commitment loud and clear.”

This year acclaimed French film director Noémi Laforte will participate in several activities. “Her film Mon Héroïne (MY HEROIN) tells the inspiring story of a young woman’s dream of making a film in Hollywood. November 26, Noémi Laforte will participate in a roundtable discussion of the world of women in cinema. Both on and off camera.”
