IKEA – Father’s Day
Don’t confine them as ‘florists’, although some of them are. It’s easy to make that mistake as flowers can be a major element of their design. Florals, however, are just one of the elements they can use. Others include lights, cloth, lanterns and almost anything they can come up with creatively. Their design can include furniture, the stage, chandelier anything that enhances the look and feel of the place.

You also cannot confine the event stylists work to weddings or product launches. Among the UNVEIL participating stylists are Allen Uy and JP De Jesus of BLOOMS Events Allen & JP.
The two lead a throng of volunteers to assemble the pink floral arc that welcomed LENI and KIKO. The rally in Robinsons Starmills, Pampanga was the envy of other campaign rallies around the country for the tunnel of flowers and pink paper matchet.

Upcycling in UNVEIL 2023
On the other hand is the ingenuity of yet another UNVEIL stylist Robert Blancaflor. His work consists of paper cups and paper plates made to look like metallic pieces. Which made it look expensive. Crafting them to round 3 dimensional shapes, lanterns or molecular structures. He successfully elevated these humble, disposable materials into something eye catching and beautiful.

Fortunately, I was able to catch one of them who very generously granted an interview. Even if Jo Claravall was stressed out and exhausted from meeting the deadline of executing her design for the event. In spite of the lack of sleep, she was very patient, explaining the finer points of event styling.

Nowadays, there’s a greater understanding and appreciation for their work. Claravall defines, “Its dressing up a venue really. Designers do the clothes for a bride, we do the room for the couple. It’s very important. It’s what people look forward to when they come in the ballroom always. Without a stylist, without the flowers, there’s no life to a wedding really.”

These days more people appreciate the need for their services, “Ten years ago (or more). There were no stylists then. They’ll say let the hotel do it, like Edsa Shangri La. The flowers they’ll provide it. Bakit kelangan? I just said, kasi gaganda yung room. But now there really is a need for stylists. Now there’s traction and understanding.”

Of course as with all major events in one’s life the two words that we dread: SAVE UP, is unavoidable. She suggests they find the stylist that best suits them, “My advice is do the research. In this room there are a lot of us. Find one who resonates with your style. Then pick the person who can best translate you in an event. At the end of the day I will always say, you are your stylist.”

What do they want guests to feel? What do they want the guests to experience? So it’s really their home for one day. So its picking the person who can translate you.”

She selected Capiz, Pampas grass and corn husk flower. She chose them because, “They’re Filipino. They’re unique to us. They are so local that you take them for granted. When you make them glamorous, when you use them for event, it takes on a new life. Their use elevates them.”

For this year’s Unveil theme I chose to transform an old wooden door as my subject. The process of upcycling is better than recycling. Because in recycling you need to destroy the item to create something new. Whereas upcycling takes waste and creates something new from its current state.

Unveil’s theme for this year is very relevant. Now the world is experiencing climate change and plastic pollution in the oceans. Upcycling items instead of throwing them away is a welcome change.
I decided to use every day items I have at home. And one that occupies a lot of space in the house. I hope to give a second life and new function for these materials. So I can make them more valuable and beautiful than their previous life.

I have chosen to upcycle items that are purely organic such as capiz balls, pampas grass and corn husk flowers. They are beautiful and sustainable as well. I like that these elements have a very soft yet earthy vibe. A perfect warm complement to the color blush.
