The project allots a total of 10 Million Pesos in scholarship grants for four aspiring women pilots. “This fund will award PHP 2,500,000.00 each to four (4) deserving and qualified female cadet pilots to help kickstart their aviation training. Lucio Tan’s Legacy

Captain Lilybeth Tan-Ng, AVP for Pilot Affairs for PAL said, “When little girls see women in leadership roles, it inspires them to do the same and possibly go beyond.”

Captain Lilybeth just happens to be the daughter of PAL Chairman Lucio C. Tan and wife of PAL President and CEO Capt. Stanley K. Ng.

PAL is continuing the legacy of the Chairman supporting scholarships. That have now totaled beyond a thousand (1,363 students) of beneficiaries in 13 years through University of the East and Tan Yan Kee Foundation (TYKFI). This is not counting the many other scholarships Kapitan Lucio Tan has personally supported prior to those 13 years and not coursed formally through the foundation.

Women Empowerment

Philippine Airlines has consistently been at the forefront of women’s empowerment with many historic firsts.

Capt. Aimee Carandang-Gloria became Southeast Asia’s first woman pilot to fly a commercial airline flight in 1989 and the first Southeast Asian female Captain in 1993.

ALL Female Flight Deck

The first all-female Flight deck crew with a wide body aircraft landed in Manila from Riyadh October 15, 2020. Composed of Captain Yvonne Sunga, First Officer May Maria Segovia and Second Officer Marie Rose Maximo.

After the historic flight Captain Yvonne Sunga was quoted, “In flying, there’s no gender.”

The trio flew PAL flight PR 8655 on an Airbus 330. The three were also former flight attendants prior to becoming pilots. That historic All female flight crew was so well received that they managed to expand this further.

ALL Female Flight Deck & Cabin Crew

This time, it was both the cockpit crew and cabin crew that were all female.

On March 22-24, 2023, Capt. Emmie Inciong-Ragasa took command of the flight to Guam (PR110) and was assisted by then First Officer Lilybeth Tan-Ng. And the return flight (PR111) was commanded by Capt. Hidelina Patrimonio.

The all-female cabin crew were led by Flight Purser Edrose Mae Tang. The crew was comprised of FA Gladys Lim, FA Frances Anne Alindogan, FA Verona Rae Salangsang, FA Ana Beatriz Alvarez, and FA Pamela Jaine Sta. Ana.

In a Global Women’s Forum at the AB WON PAT International Airport in Guam, Captain Liliybeth said in a speech, “What then is an empowered woman? She is a catalyst for change. A promoter of new ideas and trendsetter who innovates new ways for the greater good.”

Capt. Hidelina Patrimonio shared, “The first challenge was we were a minority. It’s not an accepted profession for women. I remember my grandmother encouraging me to do something else rather than fly. But I always wanted to do this. I tried very hard to overcome the obstacles. PAL expanded that further by launching “9 flights with All Women Pilots and Crew on March 4, 2024. These flights include international destinations with some heading to the United States, Vietnam and Indonesia.” From abs-cbn.com :

During that time, PAL has increased their recruitment of women pilots to 12%.

The ‘9 flights program’ were led by Captains: Yvonne Sunga, Rona Guevarra, Samantha Bachini and Laviña Ramnani.

Capt. Rona Guevara flies the Boeing 777 and has been flying since 1993, “As a flight instructor I always remind my students flying is not just take off and landing. We need to be stable in all things. The essence of being a pilot is after navigating through really challenging weather conditions up there. I want my passengers to feel safe whenever they fly with me… Aim high, go for your dreams. This is the best job in the world.”
