The film broke barriers winning 2 Oscars, “Among its accolades, THE ZONE OF INTEREST received five nominations (including Best Picture) at the 96th Academy Awards, winning two: Best International Feature (the first for a non-English British film) and Best Sound. Oppressive Hum

This may be the best film with the masterful use of sound as a means to deliver mood and message. What you don’t see, is sometimes worse than what you do see on screen.

More than any other film sound was used ingeniously. Especially off screen sound. In the early scenes there’s this oppressive, yet invisible hum. Similar to a hum from a machine, which was never explicitly shown, except your mind does wonder. Could it be the gigantic furnaces or gas chambers, operating non-stop? In some ways that’s worse, where your mind as a viewer is left to fill in the blanks. This is one of the many reasons why it earned an Oscar for Best Sound.

Visible and Invisible Barriers

Glazer had amazing use of space, specifically physical barriers. The green grass of the front lawn of his house decorated with flowers immediately faces the austere and grey 30 ft concrete wall of the concentration camp. Between them is this imaginary divide. Between Christian Friedel (Rudolf Hoss’) idyllic family life and the horrors that they committed exterminating hundreds of thousands of Jews. Hedwig’s mom came to visit their home and called it a ‘garden of paradise’.

Arena Instead of Set

Jonathan Glazer had the novel idea of putting the cast in the home and setting up cameras. Some of them hidden, some visible but all without operators. This gave the cast more freedom of movement and encouragement to improvise. “The idea that someone would be happy in Auschwitz. The idea that someone would not want to leave Auschwitz. I set the story in that particular moment. When the actors walked on a set, there was no evidence they were ON a set. They were home. This was where they lived. I wanted to create an arena for them. And watch their behavior within that arena.”

“In terms of the house and the garden, all they saw was what we built for them. In 360 degrees they believed what we built for them. Focus pullers were in the basement. The only people they saw were each other. From all the hours of footage, I gathered what works for the story I want to tell.”

Accompanying Film

During the opening in RED Carpet Cinemas, I saw a few classes of highschoolers who also watched the screening. Realized this may be the best film for them to think about the atrocities of the Nazis and Adolf Hitler during World War II. As all the violence and ‘X Rated’ scenes were off screen. The problem is what if as viewers, they want to see, what happened beyond the encampment wall?

For college level viewers (or when highschoolers grow up), I would highly recommend SCHINDLER’S LIST, as a very close approximation. It’s the exact opposite of ZONE OF INTEREST, in that the violence were portrayed in all its gory detail. Not necessarily better, just a contrasting (or even connected) approach.

Christian Friedel’s Rudolf Hoss here even has the same haircut as Ralph Fiennes who also played the commandant of the encampment Amon Goeth. The directorial approach may be vastly different but they’re essentially telling the same story from divergent points of view.

Steven Spielberg’s SCHINDLER’S LIST won 7 Oscars in 1994 including Best Picture and also Best Sound. Wonderful starting point as historical and creative discussion.

Self-Reflection

Glazer praised his two lead actors and encapsulated their goal for the film, “I sort of try to look at this as a mirror of our lives now. Sandra and Christian were both incredibly devoted to trying to tell the truth as best they were able to… The whole point of this project is to be confronted with ourselves at some level.”
