As a fan since the original, I can say that FROZEN EMPIRE is the most terrifying Ghostbuster movie. Don’t get me wrong the laughs are there. Paul Rudd makes sure of that. But this time Kumail Nanjiani is also here with his usual annoying, self-centered, idiot schtick. That’s why he’s funny as Nadeem.

Refreshing for Hollywood to put a black man in a successful position of power. And appears like the most natural thing in the world when minorities are represented well. FROZEN EMPIRE continues that, giving Ernie Hudson more screen time as one of the central characters. Unlike the original version where Hudson’s scenes were cut in favor of Bill Murray’s role Peter Venkman.

Gil Kenan as Director

Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman

AFTERLIFE made a touching tribute to Harold Ramis (Egon Spengler) who also passed away 2014. You can see the influence of both Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis in the current versions of Ghostbusters. Upon Ramis’s death, then-President Barack Obama released a statement, saying, ‘When we watched his movies—from ANIMAL HOUSE and CADDYSHACK to GHOSTBUSTERS and GROUNDHOG DAY—we didn’t just laugh until it hurt. We questioned authority. We identified with the outsider. We rooted for the underdog. And through it all, we never lost our faith in happy endings.”

Jason Reitman has stepped out of his father Ivan’s shadow as filmmaker and has added to his own legacy in AFTERLIFE and FROZEN EMPIRE. The original creators of Ghostbusters are Ivan Reitman, Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd. Aykroyd is also back as Ray Stantz, operating an occult book shop. Grace McKennan

But enough of the oldies, the energy and appeal of FROZEN EMPIRE is in the new generation. The dynamic of a family is what gives it heart and relatable twist. Grace McKennan as Phoebe is the young 15 year old, trying to find her way as a teenager and as a full-fledged Ghostbuster. Although she has more than enough brains and guts to be one, society doesn’t see it that way. Grace is 17 summers young in real life.

Grace’s acting experience is nothing short of impressive having played Esther Keyes in the prophetic HANDMAID’S TALE. Which has won countless Emmy’s and Golden Globe awards.

Calling HANDMAID’S TALE a heavy drama is an understatement and has more than developed her acting chops. Phoebe here is also a complex role. A teen going through love and identity. The lesbian romance is more hinted than actualized, especially for someone so young. I’d consider Ghostbusters STILL very much a family movie.

Finn Wolfhard

Finn may be the most logical casting choice in Ghostbusters, since AFTERLIFE. He is one of the main characters in NETFLIX smash hit STRANGER THINGS. Which is set in the 1980s where a group young friends do battle with creatures from another dimension called the Upside Down. Sounds like the younger version of Ghostbusters which had its first film in 1984.

The young fans of the series, would naturally gravitate towards Ghostbusters and that’s what happened. AFTERLIFE was such a hit in its U.S. opening weekend ($44M opening totaling to $122M in domestic gross) encouraging Sony to produce more Ghostbusters movies. Now FROZEN EMPIRE has improved on that success.

Finn has that young rockstar vibe with long curly hair, gaunt face and Keanu / Ashton Kutcher appeal. He plays Trevor, the eldest son of Carrie. Although 3 years older than Phoebe, he’s a little bit dumber. But also funnier. Trevor’s trying to gain his parents’ trust with adult responsibilities. One of which is driving Ecto1.

Rounding out the new young squad is Celeste O’Connor (Lucky) and Logan Kim (Podcast).

Lucky is part of the Paranormal Research Center owned by Winston. Podcast, is ironically, the podcast and video producer of Ray Stanz. So happy to see Logan Kim as an Asian rep in the GB team, another first. He was also in KUNG FU PANDA 4 and THE WALKING DEAD: DEAD CITY. My own favorite addition is Patton Oswalt as Dr. Hubert Wartzki a language expert based in the New York Public Library.

New Entities

Coming from the scene above, there’s the Hell’s Kitchen Sewer Dragon. A long elongated ghost creature. One of the interesting and scarier entities is the ‘Possessor’. Instead of taking humans it is able to take control of objects. That has terrifying consequences.

Pukey (pronounced pyukee) is a short creature that spews ectoplasm to those who think he’s adorable. The spelling of his name is remarkably similar to the Filipino slang for female genitalia. BOTH Pukey and Possessor are in the Hasbro toy line, Fright Features.
