DUNE PART TWO, has exceeded all my expectations since DUNE. All battles, hand to hand combat, politics, intrigue are multiplied several times over. This is the fruition of what the first movie built on. A third movie, even a fourth are very much welcomed. As Frank Herbert’s DUNE saga is able to accommodate them all, with more than enough material.

Writer director Denis Villeneuve, has walked the fine line following the book and successfully expounding on it.

Rats To Trump’s Vermin

While Dune’s storyline and setting seems as far removed from our own as it could be, screenwriters Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts were able to make it immediately relevant. Starting from character design The Harkonnen are milk white in complexion with no hair. Could skin heads be an inspiration? The Fremen who inhabit Arrakis, were mostly cast with actors of African and Middle Eastern descent.

The Harkonnen, refer to the Fremen as rats. But it was Dave Bautista who plays Beast Rabban who seemed to scream ‘Rats!’ most intensely. An indication of how they perceive other intelligent races as subhuman. Or even worse, pests that have to be exterminated.

This echoes the recent speech of former President Trump referring to political opponents as ‘vermin’. A term originally used by Adolf Hitler referring to Jews and other migrants in Germany. Although, The Harkonnens are the actual invaders of Arakkis, the only planet which produces Spice. Fremen are the native inhabitants, not unlike the colonial experience of our world. Where Caucasian rulers exploit the natural wealth of nations they invade and marginalize original inhabitants. (Just like the U.S.)

Novelist, science fiction and fantasy pioneer Frank Herbert has to be recognized for his genius. Especially in assigning the highest religious figure in DUNE to women, called Reverend Mother. Chani’s closest ally is Shishakli played by Souheila Yacoub. Shihshakli is one of the fiercest Fremen warriors. She was able to kill nine Harkonnen soldiers by herself. Souhelia’s early training as a rhythmic gymnast prepared her for the many physical combat scenes. She also happened to be Miss Suisse Romande winner in 2012. That’s the official Swiss candidate to the Miss Universe competition.

Psychotic Austin Butler

Austin Butler had a breakout role as ELVIS, earning no less than a Golden Globe, BAFTA Best Actor and Oscar Nomination. The sweet faced matinee idol may not have been the first name to come mind for the role of villainous Feyd Rautha. But he proved everyone wrong looking unrecognizable and being truly psychotic, as the Harkonnen killer. Another rock star in Sting was Feyd in the 1984 version of DUNE.

What DUNE PART TWO was able to achieve is to show more of the planets environ. Including a gladiator-like scene with Feyd showing off his hand to hand knife and sword skills. This is where the Filipino martial art Kali was certainly highlighted using two blades at a time. Similar to the Arnis, that’s more commonly practiced locally. Butler, shared in an interview he was working out with arnis even in his youth, which he made use of in this movie.
