John Wick Chapter 4, may be the most anticipated in the series. Keanu Reeves (John Wick) did fall off the roof of a building after being shot by Ian McShane (Winston). Audiences saw a barely breathing Wick in the ending but we wanted to know what happened and how will he get his revenge.

Suspending your disbelief in the super assassin’s seeming indestructibility can be the weakness. But it can also be why it’s fun. Having that one skillful killer mow down his enemies, with guns and hand to hand combat is what won over millions of fans around the world. Wick is after all, known as Death Made Flesh, Baba Yaga, The Boogey Man. Characters created by writer / producer Derek Kolstad who also wrote NOBODY (2021) starring Bob Odenkirk.

Watsons: Kwentong Albularyo

It’s always been creative in that sense, knives, all kinds of guns and various martial arts. All that is multiplied several times in Chapter 4. Brazilian jiu jitsu with Kung Fu and guns shot inches from the face, inches from the neck. This is to avoid the body armor and bullet proof protection of other assassins.

IMAX with Dolby Atmos

IF there was a movie specifically made for IMAX, this would be it. Director Chad Stahelski in one scene shows almost one long take, albeit above the ceiling. As John is surrounded in a building, he shoots them while trying to evade others. The camera tilts down showing how he hides from attackers in corners and goes room to room in one fluid shot. As a viewer you get a comprehensive view of the action while not losing the feeling of danger.

The Dolby Atmos technology brings the authentic sounds. Cars along the Arc De Triomphe zoom past John and Mark Zaror (Chidi) as they have a brutal hand to hand combat. The car sounds also travels across the screen, sometimes behind viewers, bringing them to the action. (While not getting killed that is)

The violence for the John Wick series has never been for the faint of heart. But Chapter 4 takes it to a level fans have never seen before. Could it be too much? It’s excessive in a good way giving us far more than we could ever ask for.

Anything can be a weapon, the use of cars here are particularly cruel. John doesn’t just run someone over, he has to cut him in half between a car and van. Both John and Chidi get hit by cars during their fight scene. Stuntmen falling down steps is almost a cliché. Here they have one brutal fight scene after another as they fall literally hundreds of steps in Paris’ longest, most historic staircase in Rue Foyatier. Which, officially has 300 steps and is 432 feet high.

The Japanese katana goes against a steel sword hidden in a cane. These are from two legendary assassins: Donnie Yen (Caine) and Hiroyuki Sanada (Shimazu).

Donnie Yen (Caine)

Caine is blind and uses a steel sword sheathed in (what else) a cane / walking stick. Samada as Shimazu is the owner of the OSAKA Continental and is dressed in a male kimono. That harkens to the samurai of yesteryear. Nun chucks also make an appearance for John to use and bangs the head of an enemy on a Taiko drum. Watch out for the two legit sumo wrestlers barreling down against the team of the High Table. They are both over 420 lbs and 6’2 tall: Yoshinori Tashiro and Hiroki Sumi.

Semi-Automatic Shotgun shoots flames

Speaking of things you haven’t seen before, is a magazine loaded shotgun that seems to not just blast its victims but also includes flames. There’s a real world assault rifle / shotgun made by Tartan. Aptly named TTI JW4 Dracarys Gen-12, which is the command of Kaleesi to her Dragons in burning her enemies. “Dracarys!”, from Game of Thrones and now House of the Dragon. I don’t know if producers took liberty with the special effects with trailing flames or if (the real gun) works that way. BUT it sure is fun seeing Wick fry his enemies with it.

Donnie Yen is one of those Hong Kong film stars that transcended success in Asia and broke through Hollywood. In Donnie’s case it was many projects ago, ROGUE ONE (2016) was where he also played a blind assassin: Chirrut Imwe. And also recently in MULAN (2020).

But he is primarily known for his own action franchise, IP MAN 4 FINALE (2019) — as the latest. He has a long list of projects but one that showed his comedy skills as well as action is ENTER THE FAT DRAGON (2020), a Japanese / Chinese co-production, mostly shot in Tokyo.

In JW4, he is able to play the blind assassin role so convincingly, he could easily pull off the role of DAREDEVIL. Something Warner Bros, might seriously consider. In an interview with GQ, Yen revealed his methods. He cites his search for authenticity in characters and willingness to improvise action sequences.

Scott Adkins

For those familiar with the work of British TV star and action hero Scott Adkins UNDISPUTED I to III and THE DEBT COLLECTOR , they may not recognize him in JW4. He is in a fat suit as overweight German crime boss Killa, along with a heavy accent. The role allowed Adkins to show his acting prowess. The fight scenes are particularly challenging with all the added weight and bulk.

In an interview with inverse.com, Adkins was able to reveal his inspirations for the role: “It [came from] when he first watched Sammo [Hung] in Enter the Dragon, doing all these backflips,” Adkins says about Stahelski’s first descriptions of Killa. “That was one of the concepts he had for the character.” Another major point of inspiration came from the shady Signor Ferrari, played by Sydney Greenstreet, in the 1942 classic Casablanca. “The prosthetic side is a big thing. That was mentioned straight off the bat, and I was up for it,” Adkins says. “What an opportunity to come up with a crazy character like this.” But while Adkins still maneuvers across the screen with terrifying ferocity, the role also gives Adkins space to really chew up the scene as an actor. Lance Reddick (Charon)

Lance Reddick

March 17, 2023 about a week from the premiere of JW4, cast member Lance Reddick passed away. Reddick has had a constant presence in the franchise as Charon. His was a calming, reassuring character for both John and Winston. The closeness of the three on screen extended to real life.

Reddick was found unresponsive in his home in Studio City, L.A. The exact cause of death has yet to be announced although authorities have deemed it natural and ruled out foul play. He gained popularity for several TV series: THE WIRE and FRINGE and LOST.

One of his beloved performances is in the video game DESTINY and yet to be released work in DESTINY 2. Game Developer Bungie said in a statement, “For now, we will honor his presence through his performances yet to come in the game, and in the memories that will last us a lifetime.”

Polygon.com identified Reddick’s yet to be released work: “Reddick reprised his role from that (JW4) franchise in an upcoming spinoff film, THE BALLERINA, which does not yet have a release date. That’s not the end of the list, though.
