A gold colored folding screen was set up on stage. A single dancer clad in an elaborate kimono glided in the center with what seemed like small steps. Wearing white socks, sliding imperceptibly, making her ‘glide’ on the surface.

One way to depict her performance is micromovements. Her face turning one way, head tilting, a flicking of the wrist. Holding the fan a certain way. The movements are slow, deliberate. It feels meditative, zen-like. The dance equivalent of less is more.

Mesmerizing
For ballet aficionados who are used to athletic movements, leaps, large gestures, Nihon Buyo seems like an antithesis. Even our own native dances like the tinikling, to the gongs of our Benguet brethren all have a boisterous quality. Filipinos have a general idea of what traditional dance is.

That’s exactly why, the slow, deliberate, almost ceremonial qualities of Nihon Buyo is so mesmerizing. Even the background of a gold folding screen has to be taken to account along with the elaborate textures of the Kimono. The dance is efficient, clean and minimalist which can be best described as . . . Japanese.

BELLE’S 14 minute Ovation
The fests opening film BELLE, an award winning anime has a personal connection with Matsuda, “BELLE is an animated masterpiece by highly acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda. It was nominated as animation of the year and won outstanding achievement in music award during the 45th Japan Academy Film prize. Audiences gave this film an amazing 14 minute standing ovation when it premiered in 2021 Cannes Film Festival in France.”

“At the time I was head of the Cultural Section of the Embassy of Japan in France when I heard of this news. Unfortunately I didn’t have the chance to see it when I was there. After that I was posted here in the Philippines, September. Since then I have been reminded every day of the deep cultural ties between Japan and the Philippines. So it is fortunate for me that I can finally enjoy this film with Filipino audiences. I am sure we’ll love it just as audiences in Cannes did. Or perhaps even more. Before I conclude I would like to send Japan Foundation, its partners and its collaborators who have produced these events. I hope everyone enjoys the featured film.”

The ceremony of breaking open the lid of a sake barrel signals the New Year. And is also done as a celebratory rite in weddings, sporting events and other openings. Kagami Biraki was started by Shogun: Tokugawa Ietsuna in the mid 1600s. He broke a sake barrel to inspire his troops in the eve of battle. When they returned victorious it came to symbolize new beginnings since then.
