Wonder no more why AVATAR: Way of the Water, took 13 years to produce. When you see it you realize the whole expansive world of PANDORA, that James Cameron, another 4 screenwriters (Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman and Shane Salerno), hordes of visual effects artists and cast created.

It’s not just about impressive visuals, although it will definitely pull you in. But more about changing one’s perspective. That’s what makes AVATAR 2 glorious and brilliant, how James Cameron is able to put you in the shoes of the Na’Vi (native inhabitants), even in the shoes of the Tulkun a prehistoric whale bigger than our own sperm whale here on earth. The whole world itself, is a sentient being who is able to feel and think. That is Eywa, mother nature to us.

Because he’s done that, you realize as a viewer how we as humanity have ruined our own planet. And in the future, plan to ruin other living planets in the name of humanity’s survival. It’s an old, invaluable lesson we don’t want to think of or are so tired of hearing by now. That we have to take care of our planet here and now before it’s too late.

Thing is, our planet is in even greater crisis now and we really all have to do something about it. Name it from Climate Change to the ever increasing Plastics Crisis. Why can’t we as humanity internalize that lesson now? Before rendering our home planet completely uninhabitable. And having to travel to other planets and destroying life there too?

IMAX 3D Glory

Putting that to screen in all its 3D glory, is what AVATAR2 was able to achieve. The Tulkun that gigantic whale also swims faster to the point where it is able to soar through the air like a dolphin jumping out of the water. The underwater sequences are nothing short of magnificent. Again, you have to catch in 3D, in order to immerse yourself in it. Because we don’t have the technology to travel lightyears in space to find PANDORA or any planet like it, the next best thing is watching it in 3D. Viewing it on your phone, laptop or TV at home can never do it justice.

Creatures

James Cameron expanded what we already knew about whales here on earth. For example he made the Tulkun, more intelligent than humans. The tulkun have a genuine relationship with the Na’Vi. Kate Winslett’s character Ronal, considers one Tulkun mother as her ‘sister’, who creates songs.

There are also many flying creatures, that the Na’Vi ride. Again the relationship is different than horses here on earth. They have to mentally bond with the creatures to successfully control them. The flying beasts also vary from region to region. Jake Sully’s forest region have the The Great Leonopteryx (Toruk) and The Mountain Banshee (Ikran). While the coastal region has the Skimwing and the Tetrapteron (Fkio).

Awa’atlu – The Metkayina Village

You’d think the Hallelujah Mountains or Thundering Rocks as the Na’Vi call them are spectacular enough. The coastal region is not any less breathtaking. The sea’s clarity may be what our oceans looked like before the industrial revolution.

There’s a wealth of sea creatures, white sands and crystal clear waters. Jake Sully’s forest dwelling family are themselves overwhelmed by the underwater beauty they see. Again, immersing yourself in that environment through 3D will definitely be worth it. Director James Cameron had this in mind while shooting it. And creating the animation.

Facial Performance Capture

Sigourney Weaver’s original character in AVATAR1, Dr. Grace Augustine is in some form of stasis/coma here in AVATAR2. Her daughter Kiri was conceived and born during this state. Through the power animation, Sigourney Weaver gets to play Kiri at 14 years old. Weaver is 73 in earth years.

Sigourney Weaver’s Kiri, is a world away from her action packed and maternal character Ellen Ripley in ALIENS (1986). Where she wielded a robot just like the ones that invaded Pandora to defeat an Alien facehuggers mother. Also written and directed by James Cameron.

More of her facial expressions, nuances along with the other actors were captured accurately like never before. Producer Jon Landau explains, “Making a movie on Pandora, Pandora doesn’t exist. Avatars don’t exist at 9 foot tall. We have actors working in a volume, facial head rigs on their heads. And we capture a hundred percent of their performance. One of the big technological advances we’ve made on the sequel is the facial performance capture. We’re capturing a much higher fidelity of performance.

From Hyperbeast: ‘the currently untitled Avatar 3 and the start of Avatar 4 are all set to take place in close proximity to one another. Producer Jon Landau also confirmed that all the newly introduced characters will be a part of the upcoming Avatar sequels, “Each movie is going to introduce audiences to new clans, new cultures on Pandora. Once we introduce a character, they stay a part of the ongoing evolution. We just add to it. So you can expect to see the Metkayina that you meet in this movie in subsequent movies. There are other clans that we’ll introduce in movie 3 that you’ll see in movie 4 and so on and so forth.”

The complete Avatar franchise is expected to consists of five films in total.
