Javier Bardem (Blanco) out of desperation takes his employee Manolo Solo (Miralles) to a strip joint. This is after they discover Miralles’ wife is having an affair. In front of them are two stunning women. But Miralles doesn’t even look at them. Blanco attempts to make him feel better.

Blanco: In your mind, you have to put your wife and her lover in one drawer. You have to put your job and kids in another drawer. That’s the only way to organize it and survive in life. Miralles: How many drawers can I have?

Blanco: Infinite, that’s not the point. What matters is you put the bad in one place, the good in another and other drawers if you like. Miralles: I can’t put my wife and her lover in the same drawer. Blanco: Why not? Miralles: I can see them having sex in it.

How writer / director Fernando Leon De Aranoa managed to put that together in a witty, entertaining script and movie is what may have won him 6 trophies at the 36^th Goya Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Javier Bardem), Original Screenplay, Best Score (Zeltia Montes) and Best Editing (Vanessa L. Marimbert).

The premise is simple, how to keep Blanco’s business (manufacturing scales) afloat just long enough to earn a regional award. A stamp of approval, which may mean financial subsidies from the government. So he’d do whatever it takes even meddling into the personal lives of his employees to do so, including jeopardizing his own.

Screenwriter and director Fernando Leon De Aranoa and Javier Bardem have a long history stretching way back to 2002. Fernando has won Best New director for FAMILIA (1996), Best Director: BARRIO (1998), MONDAY’S IN THE SUN and now the latest: THE GOOD BOSS (2021). Tied with Pedro Almodovar with the most Goya Best Director awards at 3.

Both MONDAY’S and THE GOOD BOSS deals with labor and employment issues. The difference according to him is that there is no solidarity among the workers in the latest film. Previously they felt their class was a unifying element for them to protest and defend their rights. Now, the disunity is a distressing trend in the current condition. He also believes there’s a lot more humor in THE GOOD BOSS than any other film he’s done before.

Javier Bardem is perfect for the role Blanco. On the surface, at least, he’s a caring boss. For him it’s more important to be perceived as someone who cares than to have genuine empathy for his employees. In reality, he’s just out to use and manipulate people. Bardem easily inhabits those complex roles. And makes them relatable no matter how despicable. Because of the realism in his performance, immoral and even cruel decisions seem reasonable.

De Aranoa describes Bardem as charismatic and magnetic. This is their third film together. They also did LOVING PABLO (2017) with Bardem playing Pablo Escobar and Penelope Cruz as the lead actress. Javier Bardem, himself, has won an Oscar Best Supporting Actor, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (2008).

In an interview with Scott Roxborough of The Hollywood Reporter, Bardem revealed his fascination for the combination of evil and charm in a character, “Life is full of colors, not just black and white elements, especially for you to deal with in one hour, forget 2 hours. Comedy is there in the writing, in the situations, in the dialogue. It wasn’t for me to play comedy. It was for me to be serious and as painful as possible. So the audience can have a good laugh about his suffering or his stress. This is serious stuff. He’s not making fun of himself.”

Harvey Weinstein Inspiration

Bardem elaborated on how people in positions of power should be more conscious of abusing employees, “When we have some kind of power, whether it’s CEO or just a bar owner, we have to be careful what we do with that power. We all have our section of power and really abuse the power unconsciously. We have to be aware of that. Most of the time its approved of because that person in particular is fun, is charming. You feel like he’s warm. You feel like he really cares. Or she really cares. Then you realize that person has invaded your personal space. And is taking a lot out of you. That happens everywhere.”

In the same interview, Bardem also confessed using convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein as one of the inspirations for his character, “That happens also in the film industry. Being the highest example is Harvey Weinstein. Below Harvey Weinstein there are many people who can do that. I have never had the chance to work with anybody like that. But I’ve met him. You can tell he was a very attractive person to talk to. He knew a lot about movie making. He was very charming. He’d speak volumes about his understanding about movie making. He was fun. You realize that attracts a lot of people. Then he will do his horrible things. That was the kind of profile we were aiming to portray. That exists everywhere not only in Spain.”

One of the interesting characters in the movie is Liliana played by the young Almudeña Amor. While Blanco was easily seducing and disposing of women he takes advantage of, Liliana ends up as more than he could handle. Amor won two Best New Actress nods at the 77th CEC Medals and 30th Actors and Actresses Union Awards.

De Aranoa describes her, “The film tells us about power not just in professional but personal to get what we want. Using his power over different ways. There’s this very young lady. I’m very fragile but at the same time she’s very strong. And there is a dark side that you can’t tell in the beginning. I loved Almudeña because I could tell from the very beginning that she could bring that for the character. It’s like you never know exactly what’s going through her head. And I find that kind of mystery very interesting.”

From Global to Specific

Another major accolade for EL BUEN PATRON is the Best Ibero-American Film along with Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actor at the 9^th Platino Awards. The Platino award involves not just Spanish movies but the whole of Latin America. Its more prestigious in that sense, covering a wider territory.

Given out by Entidad de Gestión de Derechos de los Productores Audiovisuales (EGEDA) along with the Federación Iberoamericana de Productores Cinematográficos y Audiovisuales (FIPCA). The awards are currently delivered in 19 categories, 14 for film and 5 for television.

From a more global out look to more specific. I noticed an award for Best Film Actor in a Minor Role – Fernando Albizu (THE GOOD BOSS). This is from 30th Actors and Actresses Union Awards in Spain. I have not seen it from other award giving bodies. But should be emulated.

Albizu is in the role of Roman as the bungling security guard of the factory. One of the funniest performances from the film. De Aranoa was referring to this when he said that ‘So many people are involved in creating a theme going towards a goal. Every actor involved deserves credit’.
