A single bass line from his acoustic guitar set the tone even before he walked on stage. His voice was stirring, haunting, expressing the anguish of the common Filipino, of every Filipino. His voice was our voice, as we are all overwhelmed by the problems of inflation, corruption and countless others that face our country today.

Music has the power to stir the emotions in ways, words alone cannot. In a night where, the works of many National Artists were on full display, Bullet Dumas performance may have been the most moving.
Dumas’ voice was the perfect vehicle for ALING PAG IBIG PA?, originally a soundtrack for movie SISTER STELLA L (starring Vilma Santos). The song is an adaptation by Pete Lacaba on the poem PAG-IBIG SA TINUBUANG LUPA by founding father Andres Bonifacio, with music composed by Ding Achacoso.

National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab has the role of musical director and features a lot of his work, composition and arrangements along with new songs for that special event. He conducted the Manila Symphony Orchestra, while the show was scripted and directed by Floy Quintos.

Mr. C’s imprint was all over, showcasing his courageous love of country. He was the perfect man for the job. The night was a reverie of musicals highlighting different eras of Philippine history. It was no coincidence that Cayabyab (aka Mr. C) was part of those memorable shows through the years as composer and musical arranger: KATY, RAMA HARI, NOLI ME TANGERE, EL FILIBUSTERISMO, SPOLIARIUM, ILUSTRADO ANG BUHAY NI RIZAL (1998), AGILA film (1979) etc.

That night, he was also able to assemble the best singers and performers for the task. Director Floy Quintos on the other hand put together a cohesive and entertaining whole, through the script as well as directing. Quintos did justice to the many works of National Artists, from the realm of fashion (Ramon Valera) to literature (Bienvenido Lumbera) to dance (Ramon Obusan) and music (Fides Cuyugan-Asencio) who were honored in one unforgettable show.
BAYAN KONG PANGARAP
The two also collaborated on a new song (composition by Mr. C and lyrics by Quintos). Entitled BAYAN KONG PANGARAP with lead vocals by Bituin Escalante. Bito’s powerful voice gave life to the heart rending, inspiring lyrics combined with melancholic music only Mr. C can compose.

No less riveting were new songs written and composed by Mr. C featured that night: SABIHIN MONG IKA’Y PILIPINO sung by the young trio of Esang de Torres, Noel Comia Jr. Kyle Napuli and the Ateneo Chamber Singers and O BAYAN KO as part of the group finale. All of the songs are worth listening to and learning from. Perhaps a repeat performance, for the whole show can be organized as the materials are just too good not to be seen or heard again, live.

There was a dazzling array of stars: Celeste Legaspi, Arman Ferrer, Gab Pangilinan, Gian Magdangal, Camille Lopez-Molina, Esang de Torres, Noel Comia Jr., Bituin Escalante, Kyle Napuli, Poppert Bernadas, Anthony Castillo, Erwin Lacsa, Nica Tupas, Katherine Tiuseco, Ryan Cayabyab Singers, Ateneo Chamber Singers and Bullet Dumas.

RAMA HARI
The show itself had many performances that reflected salient points in history. The pre- Spanish period was represented by IISA ANG TIBOK and MAGBALIK KA NA MAHAL from the musical RAMAHARI both lyrics by National Artist for Literature Bienvenido Lumbera with music composed and arranged by Cayabyab.

It was accompanied by the RAMON OBUSAN FOLKLORIC GROUP. The same group also performed SA SALIW NG BALSE, SAGAYAN AT BANONG-BANONG a piece choreographed by their founder Ramon A. Obusan, National Artist for Dance.

Kundiman
Celeste Legaspi showed her mastery of Kundiman songs that have been long part of Filipino culture in MADALING ARAW and BITUING MARIKIT. Describing the genre, Cayabyab said, “Ang pag ibig sa bayan at mutya ay iisa.”

MADALING ARAW was originally recorded by soprano Salvacion Oppus-Yñiguez. Later re-recorded by Sylvia La Torre who became known as “The Queen of Kundiman”. The song is one of the many hits of composer Dr. Francisco Santiago and lyricist Jose Corazon de Jesus.
BITUING MARIKIT was composed by Nicanor Abelardo with lyrics by Servando Delos Angeles from the Tagalog Zarzuela Dakilang Punglo.

Dr. Francisco Santiago, the “Father of Filipino Musical Nationalism”, declared in 1931 that the kundiman “is the love song par excellence of the Filipinos, the plaintive song which goes deepest into their hearts, song which brings them untold emotions.” Endowed with such power, the kundiman naturally came to serve as a vehicle for veiled patriotism in times of colonial oppression, in which the undying love for a woman symbolized the love of country and desire for freedom. What independence day celebration would be complete without National hero Jose P. Rizal? Admittedly, Rizal did not personally advocate for an independent Filipino nation. His two novels, however, inspired many of those who fought for it, including Katipunan founder Andres Bonifacio. In turn, many playwrights and composers have honored Rizal through their work.

OH HOW SWEET ARE THE HOURS IN ONE’S NATIVE LAND is the first line in Song of Maria Clara which was part of the original novel NOLI ME TANGERE (with musical of same title). The song was adapted by Fides Cuyugan Asencio who received the National Artist Award, June 16, 2022. Gian Magdangal, Erwin Lacsa and Anthony Castillo gave a moving rendition of the song.

MI ULTIMO ADIOS, final farewell of Jose Rizal is set directly to music and is sung by Arman Ferrer and the Ateneo Chamber Singers. The song was composed by Mr. C for ILUSTRADO ANG BUHAY NI RIZAL that premiered in CCP, 1998. Arman Ferrer had a heart stopping operatic rendition of MI ULTIMO that was very much applauded.
NOLI ME TANGERE and EL FILIBUSTERISMO are the two most important novels in our history AND literature. It’s a complete mystery why they are no longer required reading to Filipino highschoolers. Something the incoming administration can rectify.

KATY!
KATY! THE MUSICAL was something near and dear to Mr. C’s heart. Historically, it represented the American influence especially the 1920’s Jazz era. KATY! is based on the life of Bodabil singer Katy Dela Cruz, whom Mr. C admired and adored. Hers was a life dedicated to the love of music and of the stage.
Joey Reyes wrote the libretto while Phil. Daily Inquirer columnist Nestor U. Torre directed the 1988 and 2013 productions. Torre passed away from COVID complications in April 2021.

One of the characters in the musical, is familiar to Pinoy audiences. The role of Dolphy initially belonged to Robert Seña, later on was given to son Epy Quizon.

The love of music and performing was reflected in the songs. Gian Magdangal (who played Peping in the rerun) sang a lively ANG ENTABLADO AY MUNDO. Gab Pangilinan gave a husky, skat performance in PAHIRAM NG KANTA reminiscent of Jazz greats Shirley Bassey, Annie Brazil. Katy herself would be proud of the whole RYAN CAYABYAB SINGERS’ moxie with their version of ABA, BA, BA, BOOGIE.

Celeste Legaspi was in the role of Olivia which was reprised by Dulce in 2013. Celeste sang a heartwarming MINSAN ANG MINAHAL AY AKO, which speaks of both the love and loneliness experienced from fame. The song is a favorite of the late President Noynoy Aquino.

Unquestionable National Artists
George Canseco’s SALAMIN NG BUHAY lyrics speak of the dichotomy of disparate lives, which can pertain to lovers, or any two people who have different destinies. In the context of the show it was meant to describe the crevasse between rich and the poor.

After the fashion segment, Marina Benipayo in a resplendent terno remained on stage. Arman Ferrer along with dancers clad in the humble attire of farmers enter. Turning to her, Ferrer sings SALAMIN NG BUHAY with the characteristic cello in the background. A visual and musical representation of the ever widening gap of the haves and have nots.

Mr. C’s inclusion of Canseco’s song was a way to honor a composer who came before him. And arguably, even had more hits. Canseco has a striking similarity with names like, Sylvia La Torre, Katy Dela Cruz, Dr. Francisco Santiago, Pitoy Moreno even Dolphy and Vilma Santos. They are all artists whose body of works are unquestionably worthy of the National Artist award, yet have not been given the honor.

Overhauling the Process
Whang Od is the oldest tattoo artist in the Kalinga tradition and is set to receive the National Living Treasures Award. But even the NCCA concedes that she would benefit from the financial prize the National Artist award can give. They blame the process for the National artist which takes so long to finish, even years. Problem is she is already 105 years old and may not benefit from the prize directly, if it is given at all.

Clearly the ‘process’ is not able to sufficiently serve artists, especially the ones the Filipino people hold dear to their hearts. So maybe, it’s time we questioned it. Maybe its time to overhaul the process so it can benefit more artists and remind our people the shining examples of their bodies of work.

That’s why, it may be the portion that moved audiences the most as they are events that we lived through, especially in the case of Mr. C. Whether it’s the First Quarter Storm, EDSA Revolution to the most recent COVID pandemic. These are events that we have recollections of and experienced.

The popular hit HANDOG NG PILIPINO SA MUNDO was written by Jim Paredes. It became an anthem for the PEOPLE POWER Revolution and was revived during the Leni-Kiko Campaign.

For most of us, Philippine Independence isn’t necessarily top of mind, either the historical event or as a concept. Hence, BAYANG PINAPANGARAP reminds us of the nation we aspire to become. TRUTH is the artist’s most powerful message. It can reflect what our people feel but cannot express. OR artists can point out the truth in society we refuse to accept. In that utopia, truth reigns.
Their ultimate message is, the fate of our country is in our hands. We have the power to make the change we need for true independence, freedom for our people.
