Mrs. Park (Cho Yeo-jeong) was gracious enough but was not going to make it easy for Kevin (Choi Woo-shik) to get the tutoring job for her daughter. Mrs. Park: “Min was an amazing tutor but if you’re not in his level, I’m afraid I can’t hire you. What I want is for you to tutor her now while I sit in and evaluate you, if that’s ok.”
Kevin tried not to show his anxiety. Mrs. Park had no idea how desperate he was to get this job. To start with, Kevin had Da Hye (Jung Ji-so) answer a questionnaire to see how he could help her. In the middle of it he suddenly grabs her left wrist and didn’t let go, which shocks the teen. Min had never touched her so soon after meeting her, let alone with her mother in the room.
Kevin: “You hesitated when you got to question number 24. And you took too long. I don’t care if your answer is wrong or right. What if that question became number 1? It would have been a huge stumbling block to your momentum which you should never allow. Your pulse never lies. You were too nervous. The key to getting the best score is to complete it confidently and then taking the time to review your answers. Never let anything break your momentum.” Not long after, Mrs. Park schedules the time of the week for the sessions. She hands Kevin an envelope thick with cash, “This is the rate that we gave Min and a little bit extra for inflation.”
Oscar Triumph and Manila Release
PARASITE had groundbreaking wins at the Oscars, most notably the very first foreign film to win BEST PICTURE. Writer / Director Bong Joon Hoo was already celebrating in his seat after winning BEST INTERNATIONAL FEATURE FILM, that he didn’t quite hear or even expect the BEST PICTURE announcement.
Bong Joon Hoo was still shocked after they had also won the Oscar’s: BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN DIRECTING and BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY. And after the Golden Globe and BAFTA: BEST MOTION PICTURE- FOREIGN LANGUAGE. Not to mention OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A CAST from the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
After the Oscar win, there was a release in major theaters here in Manila. I happened to watch it on Robinsons Movieworld Ermita which was tastefully renovated with a marked upgrade in audio capability having a new Dolby Surround Sound System. Other cinemas I highly recommend are RED CARPET of Shang Plaza Mall in Mandaluyong, Lucky Chinatown Mall, Eastwood City Mall and Resort’s World Manila.
The Chasm
By now there are countless interpretations of what the movie is about by critics and film connoisseurs. I can only give my own insights, for whatever its worth. Some have emphasized the family dynamics but for me its about not just the divide but the enormous chasm between the wealthy and the poor. It’s a cautionary tale of what happens when the wealthy or ruling class are unable to care about the plight and sufferings of the poor. That great chasm isn’t fictional but is painfully real, not just in Korea but around the world today. Maybe that’s why the story resonates so well with critics and audiences.

Production Designer Lee Ha Jun was the real genius behind this set. Architect Namgoong Hyeonja was a fictional character who designed and lived in the impressive ‘house’. Chaebol
The families in PARASITE can also be seen as a microcosm of the Chaebol in Korea. This is the general term for conglomerate specifically the dozen or so families in Korea that own and control huge corporations across several industries. The lowest rung are the laborers who are just happy to get a job. They want to please the ruling class and are loyal to their employers. They just want to work and survive. Another family represents the middle class who are educated but lie and cheat their way to get jobs. They aspire to have the comfort and lifestyle of the rich. The wealthy represent the Chaebol families who literally turn up their nose to the less fortunate. As far as they’re concerned, everyone else is just a parasite living off them. Again the stark inequality is a phenomenon happening around the world. In the U.S. they call them the top 1% who control more than the 80% of the wealth and resources.

Disasters
Filipinos could relate to a lot of the scenes here but most especially with the desperation and panic during a devastating flood. Most recently we can see a lot of our countrymen who were affected by the Taal Volcano eruption. But even before that, floods occur yearly displacing thousands of Filipinos from almost every region. Seeing the Kim family spending the night in an evacuation center cramped with dozens of other victims was both powerful and familiar. Whether it was Hurricane Katrina in the U.S. or the Bush Fires in Australia, people from all over have seen the effects of Climate change and other disasters.

Social Justice
The film imparts a lot of lessons and insights about human nature and society in general. But the most important message in my mind is the need for the wealthy to be sensitive to the needs and difficulties of the great majority of people who just happen to be poor. I remember our own Jesse Robredo who was DILG (Department of Interior and Local Government) Secretary until his untimely demise in a plane crash. He believed that it wasn’t just the government who should prioritize the needs of the poor, but everyone who is educated and well off. This was the only way that social justice or for that matter justice and equality of any kind could be achieved.
The genius of Bong Joon Hoo is to visualize that concept. He used his own personal experiences (like being a tutor) and developed it into a powerful story delivering that message.
Cohesion of Vision and Production
Chris O’Falt of INDIEWIRE has a very comprehensive article on the houses and production design of PARASITE. It is based on lengthy interviews with Writer / Director Bong Joon Hoo and Production Designer Lee Ha Jun (also of SNOWPIERCER). Lee also shared his coordination with cinematographer Hong Kyung Pyo during the design process stage and both decided on set location.

Bong as screenwriter and director was able to give blocking, shot compositions to Lee as production designer, who then designed the house and set to revolve around them. This resulted in near perfect cohesion between directorial vision and design. The main home of the affluent Park family is where 60% of the film was shot. So much so that Cannes Jurors were convinced it was a real house “Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Kelly Reichardt — were all convinced that the movie took place in a real home. In truth, Bong asked his production designer to create an “open set,” built on an outdoor lot.’

10
I don’t blame the jurors, even I myself was convinced that the original owner of that house was a real architect in Korea. I thought maybe the designs of the renowned architect were incorporated in the story. This is because the design was reminiscent of Mid Century Modern with sleek lines, use of glass, few tones. But Architect Namgoong Hyeonja was just a product of Bong’s imagination and the house is actually just a set designed by Lee Ha Jun.

Taipans
Going back to Bong’s genius is his ability to use something personal and make a universal statement out of it. I don’t think it was his intention to demonize the rich but again call to light the immense chasm, between the ruling class and the majority who are needy. While there are Chaebols in Korea, we have our Taipans in the Philippines.
Allow me to provide contrasting real world examples from the fictional elitist Park patriarch in PARASITE. These are the industrialists who have built their fortunes and have their own conglomerates. In my mind, Taipans Lucio C. Tan and John Gokongwei Jr. were not only aware of the chasm of inequality but strived to create opportunities for more people to better their lives.

Dr. Lucio C. Tan, Chairman & Pres. Tan Yan Kee Foundation and Trustee Carmen K. Tan warmly welcomed the U.E.-TYKFI scholars for school year 2018-2019 during Scholar’s recognition day, September 11, 2018 at the Century Park Hotel Manila. Photo From official website: http://www.tanyankee.org/
Lucio C. Tan
Lucio Tan is the founder and leader of the LT Group involved in companies Philippine Airlines, Philippine National Bank, PMFTC, Tanduay Distillers even Eton Properties and Asia Brewery. At the time Tan acquired University of the East, education was not as profitable a field as it is now. His real intention was to help provide quality education to more people. He also established the TAN YAN KEE FOUNDATION, ‘approaches corporate social responsibility from a holistic commitment framework targeting education, culture and sports; health and social welfare including environmental concerns; research and manpower development.’
Since 1998 the U.E.-TYKFI scholarship program has provided free quality education to deserving undergraduate students and faculty members. ‘Close to 1,000 students including 12 faculty members and 60 grantees have benefitted from the program. For the past 13 years TYKFI has spent P68.1 Million pesos for the program covering book allowance, uniform subsidy, transportation allowance and monthly stipend. U.E. has spent P98.7million for tuition and other school fees benefitting scholars.’ From official website: http://www.tanyankee.org/

Almost immediately after the Taal Volcano eruption, Asia Brewery Inc, mobilized emergency assistance teams to provide water to evacuees. They provided “Over 115,000 bottles of Absolute water were initially donated by ABI to affected towns in Batangas, which include San Nicolas, Sto. Tomas, Agoncillo, Sta. Teresita, Taal, Lemery, Bauan, Talisay and Laurel.” From Manila Times.net Asia Brewery provides emergency assistance to Taal evacuees
Tan also established the HOPE CARAVAN through the TAN YAN KEE foundation. Dr Lucio Tan himself was able to handover relief goods to evacuees from Talisay, Batangas. ‘The HOPE CARAVAN helps families who lost their livelihood as farmers, tour guides or boatmen in Talisay. Apart from victims of the Taal Volcano eruption they have also assisted the evacuees of the earthquakes in Mindanao’. John Gokongwei Jr, Founder of the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation, Inc. photo from GOKONGWEI BROTHERS FOUNDATION website
John Gokongwei Jr.
John Gokongwei Jr, who passed away November last year, was the founder of JG Summit. Their business units include: Universal Robina Corp, Robinsons Land, Cebu Pacific Airlines, Robinsons Bank, JG Summit Petrochemicals, PLDT, Manila Electric Company, United Industrial Corporation.
He established the GOKONGWEI BROTHERS FOUNDATION along with his brothers “…Johnson, Henry, and James in 1992 with the goal of having a lasting impact on education in the Philippines. The Foundation works toward the advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, believing that this is the driving force for sustainable national development.” From GOKONGWEI BROTHERS FOUNDATION website.
Gokongwei Brothers Foundation: 25 Years and Beyond
For the past 25 years the GBF has granted scholarships to deserving youth, built quality learning facilities, supported reputable academic institutions… GBF established in 1999 its first major project, a Technical Training Center with industry-standard facilities in Pasig City… GBF recognizes strength in collaborating with leading education institutions. In honor of GBF’s endowments, centers of excellence in business and engineering education adopted the official names Ateneo de Manila University John Gokongwei School of Management in 2002 and De La Salle University Gokongwei College of Engineering in 2011, respectively. From GOKONGWEI BROTHERS FOUNDATION website

What makes GBF exemplary is their ability to not only provide educational opportunities but also concrete job offers for those who have gone through their scholarships and technical programs. The jobs offered are, naturally, from their business units like Universal Robina Corporation and JG Summit Petrochemicals. AND the emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education is one that addresses not just their need for a competent workforce but more for the weakness of the educational system in the country as a whole.

Lilia B. Yang
Tita Lily or Aunt Lily, to me my brothers, my clan is not in the level of the Taipans in terms of financial success or renown. She did however, achieve a measure of accomplishment and wealth as the Director of Finance and Administration of Sycip Salazar Hernandez Gatmaitan. She was one of the original cornerstones in 1945 who built the firm from its humble beginnings to the biggest Law firm in the country.
She was seen as a maternal figure, even if she didn’t have children of her own. Employees could approach her to ask for help with their tuition for additional training or post graduate schooling. They would approach her for a soft loan for other expenses as well. She would do so out of her own pocket. The higher up she climbed the corporate ladder, the more people she was able to help. She would also aid employees with the tuition of their children.

If she was generous to her colleagues and staff, she was even more so with her relatives. Apart from tuition fees she would be approached for hospital bills and other similar emergencies. I know for a fact she was paying for living expenses of our less fortunate relatives. She’d also invest in their entrepreneurial ventures with the aim of financial independence.
Exceptional
Lilia B Yang was not as wealthy or powerful as Lucio Tan or John Gokongwei. But what was similar in the three of them is that they were strong believers in education and giving better opportunities to help change people’s lives. It’s a belief that’s backed up with decades of action AND their financial support. THIS is the polar opposite to the Park family in PARASITE who was completely oblivious to what was happening to the people around them. All they cared for was themselves.

Admittedly wealthy people like LT, JG and LBY are the exception rather than the rule. IF all rich people in the Philippines (for example) were as committed to education, providing jobs and improving the lives of more people, there wouldn’t be as much poverty. There wouldn’t be that chasm between the rich and the poor. Perhaps there would be more equanimity and social justice that Jesse Robredo was aspiring for.

Disasters in Real Life
That’s why the flood scene was in a way a turning point in the film. The Park family did not seem to care that thousands of their countrymen were suffering. Disasters happen in real life. As photographer I was considering shooting the devastation of the Taal eruption since it happened January but have not been able to, even a month later. While Lucio Tan the founder of one of the biggest conglomerates in the country, 40 years my senior, personally led the HOPE Caravan to Talisay, Batangas to hand over relief goods to evacuees.

Standing left: Dr Lucio C. Tan, Leynes Bgy Captain Bailon Caringal and Talisay Mayor Gerry Natanauan with kids who cannot return to their damaged schools. Immediately after the disaster it was his son Michael Tan, COO of Asia Brewery who mobilized teams to assist evacuees and provide 115,000 bottles of Absolute mineral water. For anyone else that would have been more than enough. But it wasn’t for LT, he had to personally be there and show his sympathy and support as well as provide added relief goods. Not a lot of people were aware the HOPE Caravan was also in Mindanao to assist earthquake victims. A disaster that was ‘overshadowed’ by Taal.

PARASITE’s Message
PARASITE is such a well written, thought out story and film that the class conflict is just one aspect that audiences can glean. There are layers upon layers of symbolism, political statements and historical references, such as the North / South Korea conflict, even gender roles, sexuality and relationships to the effects of climate change. For me, the most important message is the need for anyone, whether rich or poor to be sensitive and sympathize with the difficulties and struggles of all people everywhere.
